Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

Yea, the picture above with Sharpening=ZERO is with ZERO gain and ZERO NR.

If I pull that into Photoshop, "Smart Sharpen" cleans it up quite a bit ... but I was pretty surprised how blurry that looked ... so that's why I wonder if that's the "raw" image (as much as you can get an unprocessed image these days!) as delivered by the lens/sensor. Sure, I don't expect razor sharp ... but for an image that had plenty of exposure, I thought it would do better. BTW, I see the same thing with the 0827 firmware ... which you can see in the images below.

Good suggestion on closing up the iris. So I increased the shutter speed to 25msec (which should be PLENTY of light) and but I saw some slight metering differences between iris=50 and iris=100. So then I bumped the gain to 25 ... and still saw a slight difference. Still zero NR. Below is an animated gif with the JPEG's (from the PNG snapshots) attached. Maybe a little extra sharpness ... but not a lot.

The more I look into this, the more I realize I don't understand what the camera is doing! ;-)

Yes I tend to agree with that, these new cameras are a mystery in some respects and do not seem to respond entirely as expected. Hence why I suspect there is much going on behind the scenes, this has been echoed by others. So far although they are technically 'low light' cameras in some respects, I find that in poor lighting they need all the help they can get, for my light levels that means reducing iris, gamma in some cases and keeping gain low. Be sure to try disabling NR though and not just setting to zero, based on my testing at gain levels below 30 the NR being on an set to 0 had a noticeable effect on sharpness and detail, ie it looked like NR level was at 5-10 and not 0.

We are probably expecting too much of these Pro models. Oh, one thing just crossed my mind, have you tried area focus in your testing, I always use that, almost always. Have also noticed some front focusing on at least one of mine, had to select a focus point further back from the actual subject I needed in focus. This is worth testing, maybe select the nearest stone garden, then the right hand tree, etc. Once you get to the end of driveway then probably not much will change, the houses on the opposite side will then be in focus in theory also. Just a thought, maybe due to distance from the ground in general and subjects, I think this probably won't change much, with it being more of an overview so to speak.

Nice capture of the "digital fuzz" I have referenced previously.

I'm pleased with the fixed lens AS. you've likely seen my back door test videos. Its acceptable image quality and the color LED's being activated by motion are handy for that scene.

I dabbled with the ZE for the last two days and have not been able to get a great image at night, with said fuzz and various exposures. I'm hopeful its the location/scene so I'll try it in a different spot this week

Should say initially that is not at all bad to be honest, no such thing as a perfect image. Suggestions based on my testing...

Gain 35
Sharpness below 10
NR below 25 or even 10 if you can live with the 'grain'
Shutter 4 or less

Now this will of course make for darker image but it should be sharper and cleaner, some cannot live with the darkness  so you mileage may vary. There is no magic bullet with these Pro's sadly. Much the same for most cameras, either add light or compromise somewhere.

As per @bigredfish comment above, I also am not that happy with the night images, having tried lots, and I mean lots of settings combinations! even with flood assistance around 3000-4000 lumens, it is tough to get them to where I am happy.

It's much too dark for me at 35 gain and 4,33. :D 6,33 and 45 looks fine.

Yes that is too dark really, tough one, I would use smart as suggested above, probably adjust to get brightest IR image you are happy with and just switch on the LED's for IVS. I am running following settings on one of mine in colour at night with LED's on, higher gain than I would like but needs must for this setup. Don't ask me where gain 61 came from, I have this weird things where I either pick 59 or 61

My latest theory is to disable NR at night, sharpness to 0 and tune from there....

That IR looks good, colour one I would turn of NR and sharpness down low as possible or 0, might be a clearer shot with less smearing/high ISO processing... on second inspection it is pretty good, still worth a shot to try and clean it up. Never been big on sharpening or NR, with the new cams I am even more inclined to keep these off or to a minimum.

I can't turn NR off completely. I can turn it down to 15. I'm okay with the picture for now.

Sounds good, that is still pretty low, these things are all personal preference. Most important thing is that you can get a good freeze frame of the bad guys day or night, that right there is the challenge we all face!

Just to toss out a few more pics, here's the PNG's from the "Twin T54's" running.

The first set of three are with 0827FW (see lower left) and the others are 1022FW. Camera settings are identical with 5msec shutter, 100 iris, 0 gain, and 0 NR.

The first image in each set (see the filename) is with Sharpen=0, the second is Sharpen=50, and the third is "Sharpen=75"

I continue to prefer the colors/exposure with 1022FW ... and also see more dimpling/speckling in the driveway/road.

I don't think much else to add for 0827 vs 1022 ... thinking I should ugrade the (upper) T54 to 1022 and replace the (lower) T54 with the 5442-S3 and compare those.

Interesting, one things seems quite clear, applying any amount of sharpening also adds HDR/WDR of some kind. Detail appears from almost nowhere and and you can clearly see HDR effect, cracks in the road, between paving slabs/concrete on the drive, wow, quite apparent.

Tell me again why you're running 100 Iris?
To minimize shutter speed and gain ... and since this is a "scene" shot with the camera at fairly wide-angle (zoom 550 - about 85 degrees horizontal - testing data on that coming soon!) with the middle of the driveway being ~50' away, most everything should be (reasonably) within the depth-of-field even wide-open.

Although I just added something that is about 4' away which is a little fuzzy ... ;-)

In my photography flow, sharpening is just about the very LAST step in the processing pipeline ... but maybe it's possible that when you turn this on, it alters something in the NR algorithm early on.

Yea, I noticed that also @CamCrazy and was like WTF is going on?!?

Sharpening is just about the LAST thing I do when processing images ... but maybe that's not the case here and when you enable sharpening, it reduce the noise reduction (even though I have this turned totally off) that is presumably done early in the processing pipeline. Supporting that theory is pull that "Sharpening=0" image into Photoshop and use "Threshholds" ... there "some" info on the road ... but I don't think near as much as what "pops out" when you sharpen it.

BTW, the 1022 Firmware DOES help in this area - i.e. doesn't smear it quite as much - see images below comparing Sharpening=75 for both. I recall the 5442-S3 did even better (but maybe I only compared to 0827FW) ... so I'll be curious to compare when I put it back up.

Yes the cracks are visible with 0 sharpening but like you say they pop right out once sharpening is turned up! Really not liking the way this camera deals with setting changes, processing will still happen almost regardless of settings input. For us manual guys who like to tune this is less than ideal, I also suspect it could well be degrading the overall image, not impossible.

I will be very keen to see how the S3 looks next to this 54Pro ZE :thumb:

Noticed that the AI SSA option for Self Adaptive just appeared in the new firmware. Thoughts?

Just turned it ON.

Should I set the sharpness to 0-10 during the day and night, or only at night?
