Yea, the picture above with Sharpening=ZERO is with ZERO gain and ZERO NR.
If I pull that into Photoshop, "Smart Sharpen" cleans it up quite a bit ... but I was pretty surprised how blurry that looked ... so that's why I wonder if that's the "raw" image (as much as you can get an unprocessed image these days!) as delivered by the lens/sensor. Sure, I don't expect razor sharp ... but for an image that had plenty of exposure, I thought it would do better. BTW, I see the same thing with the 0827 firmware ... which you can see in the images below.
Good suggestion on closing up the iris. So I increased the shutter speed to 25msec (which should be PLENTY of light) and but I saw some slight metering differences between iris=50 and iris=100. So then I bumped the gain to 25 ... and still saw a slight difference. Still zero NR. Below is an animated gif with the JPEG's (from the PNG snapshots) attached. Maybe a little extra sharpness ... but not a lot.
The more I look into this, the more I realize I don't understand what the camera is doing! ;-)

Yes I tend to agree with that, these new cameras are a mystery in some respects and do not seem to respond entirely as expected. Hence why I suspect there is much going on behind the scenes, this has been echoed by others. So far although they are technically 'low light' cameras in some respects, I find that in poor lighting they need all the help they can get, for my light levels that means reducing iris, gamma in some cases and keeping gain low. Be sure to try disabling NR though and not just setting to zero, based on my testing at gain levels below 30 the NR being on an set to 0 had a noticeable effect on sharpness and detail, ie it looked like NR level was at 5-10 and not 0.
We are probably expecting too much of these Pro models. Oh, one thing just crossed my mind, have you tried area focus in your testing, I always use that, almost always. Have also noticed some front focusing on at least one of mine, had to select a focus point further back from the actual subject I needed in focus. This is worth testing, maybe select the nearest stone garden, then the right hand tree, etc. Once you get to the end of driveway then probably not much will change, the houses on the opposite side will then be in focus in theory also. Just a thought, maybe due to distance from the ground in general and subjects, I think this probably won't change much, with it being more of an overview so to speak.
so you mileage may vary. There is no magic bullet with these Pro's sadly. Much the same for most cameras, either add light or compromise somewhere.
