This is the gas field the USA had concerns of a planned Iranian pipeline from this field through Iran, Iraq, and Syria to feed the European Market.
One of the key reasons the USA encouraged blocking operations ( like the Syrian Civil War to block the route of the planned pipeline, and the overthrow of Assad )
South Pars/North Dome Gas-Condensate Field is the world's largest natural gas field, located in the Persian Gulf and shared between Iran and Qatar. It spans 9,700 square kilometers, with 3,700 km² (South Pars) in Iranian waters and 6,000 km² (North Dome) in Qatari waters. The field holds an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet (5.1×10¹³ m³) of in-situ natural gas and 50 billion barrels of natural gas condensates, accounting for nearly 40% of Iran’s proven gas reserves and a significant portion of global reserves.
Iran’s South Pars field is developed in 24 phases, with 10 phases currently operational. As of early 2026, Iran’s daily production from the field was estimated at 2 billion cubic feet, primarily for domestic use due to sanctions and technical constraints. In contrast, Qatar’s North Dome produces 18.5 billion cubic feet per day, making it the backbone of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and contributing around 80% of government revenues.
On March 18, 2026, the field was struck in a reported Israeli air strike, targeting facilities in Asaluyeh, including gas storage tanks and refineries. Iranian state media confirmed the attack, which halted output at two refineries with a combined capacity of 100 million cubic meters per day. Iran accused Israel and the U.S. of coordination, calling the strike "dangerous and irresponsible." The attack has triggered warnings from Iran that Gulf energy assets are now "legitimate targets," escalating regional tensions and causing oil prices to surge above $108 a barrel.
