Wife saw this (Broad-Banded?) water snake under the water today in our pond. Left this one alone...it is a non-venomous, eats fish and frogs...and we have plenty of frogs...

Only if you had good skills telling the future. At this point there's nobody I'd want as president who is willing to do the job. And if such a candidate were to emerge, he/she would get buried by the corrupt government, media, corporations, lobbyists, etc. Stated differently, we're screwed no matter what we do.I voted for him but lately have been questioning my wisdom in doing so.
I too don't kill non-poisonous snakes. I've learned enough about them by now to be able to ID them, although not claiming to be an expert. I cringe when I hear grown-ass men that grew up in the country here say "The only good snake is a dead snake" and then they describe killing a snake recently that sounds like a rat snake, corn snake or black racer....and NOT a cottonmouth moccasin, rattlesnake or copperhead.

My ignorance killed a yellow bellied water snake. Really felt bad about it after I found out what it was. Thing that scared us is it was only a few feet from our back door and to me looked like a Moccasin., a big one. and they have chased me before in the past. When I found out it was a frog population controller as well as other rodents I was sadden I killed a free pest controller. When asking neighbors they said shoot it. Snakes have their purpose and I plan to leave them alone too. Copperheads are plentiful out here in the woods, those may not see another day though.

Hopefully you haven't seen this in awhile. I could use it as a background on my pc for old times sake.
Below I'm holding an eastern hognosed snake that showed up in July of 2023 next to my driveway. Unfortunately, they way they flare out their neck and hiss to ward off would-be attackers they're just asking to to be killed by the uninformed. I take them across the street to the woods where there's no nearby structures and release them.
We have friends that live south of San Antonio. They have lost 1 dog and surprisingly, a cat to copper head snake bites. They as well have almost been bitten numerous times....just by accidentally stepping on them. Luckily where I live (Hill Country, north of SA) we see very few if any. Thank God.
