The Importance of Focal Length over MP in camera selection

Nope I was wrong

At zero zoom it’s 5.74 ft so probably similar with some zoom

I’ll find a video of the fixed 3.6 and post it here in a bit

Wasn’t my experience. More like 4-5 before it was at all noticeable

I think the varifocal is much less if I recall…?
So question, with that direct white light coming from the CAM, did you get any facial washout like you can on a too bright IR? I know this is a bad comparison and maybe I am thinking wrong on this cause if you blind someone with a bright flashlight you can actually get a good picture if no flections ruin it. So maybe this is a stupid question...

You got a Pro?

I had both a 4M-T and and a 4M-TZ. I gave both away

Here;s the 3,.6mm fixed 4M-T

I'm about 3ft at closest point. Notice the fuzz.
No other lights.
IR is strong, but white LED's in color die at about 15ft

There's a whole thread around here somewhere...

3449H-AS-PV-PRO (TIOC) - same as Andy's 4M-T

Here's @wittaj 's original review of the 4M-TZ. My testing and notes begin on about page 12

i'd buy the IPC-HDW5442TM-ASE-S3 from the classifieds just to have it. in case. you know how we are. 2 is good but 3 will be better.

Ouch, hadn't noticed this. That would make it much less useful in my scenario.
@bigredfish proved that wrong in his videos. Focus is fine closer up and his videos look good. Got to remember these are security cameras, if you can Identify that is the best you can do, people are not there to pose/smile for the camera, they will be moving and if they are not suppose to be there they will be moving fast. One thing my son and I did when we set up his cameras was make sure we had the cameras focus on entry points, Doors/Windows. Then of course a camera for his vehicles and the street for unwanted vehicles.

My point is, security cameras are setup differently, here we set our FPS @ 15, which work best for low light fast moving objects. In reality, you just need to get a good frame capture (Identify) pic, which can be hard on a moving person(s) in low light. The best cameras in the world are nothing without a good light source.

So in your case for your garden you may want a Vari-focal so you can zoom closer to the door. Just keep in mind this is not a PTZ, you will zoom in and leave it there. Sure you can zoom while viewing live footage but these are not trackers like PTZ's which are the Cadillac's of security cameras. In most cases you will not be viewing the intruder live.
