The official "WTF" thread

My father, a mechanic, told me a story that happened, thinking 40-50s, about a guy who invented an engine that ran off of compressed air. He said one of the big auto companies or gas companies, can't remember, bought it and the rights to it, not sure if it was patented, anyway, the agreement was he was not to ever share nor make it ever again. of course they hid the plans away... sorry I was a kid when he shared this with me, didn't really understand back then what it really meant.

The General Motors streetcar conspiracy refers to the convictions of General Motors (GM) and related companies that were involved in the monopolizing of the sale of buses and supplies to National City Lines (NCL) and subsidiaries, as well as to the allegations that the defendants conspired to own or control transit systems, in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act. This suit created lingering suspicions that the defendants had in fact plotted to dismantle streetcar systems in many cities in the United States as an attempt to monopolize surface transportation.

This was in 2022 in Decatur, AL but they keep delaying the trial of the man arrested. I am unable to find anything relating to the results of the Jan. 2026 trial, if there was one. The Ring video below is pretty crappy @ 240p but it doesn't have all the comments the TV station 720p videos do. :idk:

Excerpt:

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — According to court documents, the trial of a Decatur man charged with attempted murder after police say he hit an off-duty officer with a Jeep in 2022 has been reset to January 2026.
Gregory Martin Hill was arrested after doorbell footage showed Jack Brown, an officer with the Decatur Police Department, being hit by a Jeep in his front yard on August 16, 2022. In April 2023, Hill was indicted for attempted murder.
A jury trial was originally set for Dec. 4, 2023. Since then, the trial has been continued a number of times and was most recently scheduled for August 18. Hill’s attorneys requested that it be continued at a pre-trial hearing in early August, and Judge Charles Elliott granted that request, stating he would reset the trial for a date in 2026.
The Decatur Police Department said the incident started on the afternoon of August 16, 2022, when Brown noticed a man sitting in the Jeep “stationary” in front of the officer’s home. Brown asked the man, later identified as Hill, if he needed help.
Documents say Hill started cursing at Brown before backing out and hitting another parked car on the street. When Brown walked towards the end of the driveway, court records say Hill tried to run him over but hit a tree instead.
News 19 obtained the Ring doorbell camera footage from Brown’s residence. You can watch the full video below.
The doorbell footage shows Brown then ran into his home to get his gun and handcuffs while Hill chased after him. Documents say the off-duty officer then came back outside with his department-issued weapon and told Hill to get down on the ground, but Hill refused.
Court records say Hill got back into the Jeep as Brown tried to get him out of the driver’s seat. Hill then drove over Brown as the officer fired his gun several times into the vehicle.
The video showed Brown being pushed across the yard on the front of the vehicle before Hill was accused of backing up and over Brown’s legs. DPD said Brown was taken to Huntsville Hospital on the night of the incident and released later that night.
Other officers responded to the scene and arrested Hill, who was charged with attempted murder and booked into the Morgan County Jail with a cash bond of $1,000,000.

EDIT: I didn't see this before but just found it....his trial has been delayed (AGAIN!!) to June 2026:

Places cutting corners trying to save from having to hire a cashier, now they have a useless self-checkout machine...

I never understood why stores have these...do they save us time? No
Several times I have had to get a Store Helper to fix what does not scan properly.

Was just in a local Dollar General this morning. Manager playing games with advertised discounts and coupons. At the register I told manager to fuck himself and walked out. These stores are the lowest of the low.

You are talking about our Mall here in this one horse town, haha.

I don't particularly like people, so I use these when available. That way when the cashier asks how I am doing, I don't have to fake a smile and say "I'm fine" when I would rather tell them to piss off.

Well the other issue is businesses are really struggling to get enough reliable help.
Our local health care system has 2600 job openings they can't fill....starting pay at $34 per hour.

My son in law is President of restaurant supply house. He's been trying to hire help for 3 open positions that pay $150k per yr for over two yrs now, with no luck.

I know a local shop owner, she's reducing physical size of her shop and preparing to partially retire, again because she can't get reliable help and she's' tired of working 50-60 hrs a week, because of the hiring issue's.

We've had several restaurants close because of not being able to hire enough help.

We've got an entire generation of dead beats.

Good Point, I get it. The youth at the registers today you have to hawk eye watch. Sometimes it is in your favor when they don't ring something up, but most other times you have to correct their mistakes.

Being away from the big city is definitely nice, alot less people to deal with. I was losing faith in humanity big time till we moved out here in the country. These folks restored it real quick.

You said it right. Our educational system has failed us along with the parents of this new Entitled generation that does not know the word No...

In construction, I have had to work with some very incompetent/irresponsible youth. Don't get me wrong, every once in a blue moon you will get one that is willing to shut up and learn something/take instruction, but most are adult teenagers...pretty much usless.
