Your thoughts on server vs. desktop class hardware for BI?

I’m currently running my BI on an 8 year old recycled Dell PowerEdge T310 with a 4 core/8 thread CPU. OS is Windows Server 2008 R2. I’m running 8 cameras and performance is good with 40-60% CPU utilization. I’m always keeping my eyes open for new box so I wanted to get some feedback about a server class box versus a desktop for my next box.

Performance?

Power consumption?

Winnows Server 2016 vs. Windows Pro 10?

RAID vs. SSD?

get rid of that dell poweredge
that thing is way to high on Power consumption
with only 8 cameras you can find something for around 200-300 and only use around 40 watts
the savings in power bill should take care of the new computer within a year or so

Glad I asked, I had never checked the power consumption of my server so I just did. My server is running at 162 watts, our per kWh rate is $.168 which is costing me about $240 a year.

Who has a sub 40 watt PC that can handle the load? I thought most CPUs alone used around 70 watts.
thanks

What are your resolutions and frame rates?

Click "wiki" at top of page, and read about hardware requirements.

Dell Optiplex or HP Elitedesktop.
See my sig, that optiplex averages around 35-40 watts with my cam load.

I dug out my old mid 2011 mac mini from the closet. it has 8GB RAM, and a 500GB SSD, running win 7 ultimate. I moved BI to it and it's only using 36 watts! Now I need to find a 6TB external drive that I can connect to the firewire 800 or Thunderbolt 1 (can it handle a drive?).
