Your Car May Soon Be Monitoring Everything You Do Behind The Wheel

Not soon. It’s already here.

My ‘25 Bronco Sport has a driver facing camera and can tell when I take my hands off the wheel or take my eyes off the road. It will display a pop up message when I do either. It already knows if I don’t fasten my seatbelt. I am sure they store this information, which they will gladly share with LE and insurance companies in the event of an accident. They may already be sharing this information with my insurance company, who may use the information to set my rates.

I'll admit to being distracted while driving, mostly because there's too danged many buttons and functions available.
I'll agree with that one! Too many "features" that pretty much require you to take you eyes off the road to work them, and if you drive more than one car, the gadgets work differently in each one. Distraction monitoring could become very ironic. The computer-with-wheels is so darn complicated that the monitoring system might never allow anybody to drive it, or shut itself down for something as horrible as trying to change a radio station on a touchscreen. Brings back memories of a Star Trek episode where Kirk convinces an indestructible computer that it's the enemy, then it destructs itself. I've still got one car with real knobs and buttons, and it's a comparable joy to drive.

I’ll be driving my 2014 Toyota until the wheels fall off ..
