Can you install updates manually if you don't have maintenance? I'm thinking about holding off with changing to version 6 and wonder if I can I install it at a later point, even if my maintenance window expires?

You can install but the update likely will not activate and it will display the "Evaluation Version" watermark. I recommend that you renew your annual maintenance (if expired) before applying ANY updates.

You should renew an expired annual maintenance BEFORE updating to Version 6.

You can only install versions/updates that fall within your 1-year window of when you bought it or last paid for maintenance.

If you update to a version outside your window, then it will give an Evaluation watermark on the image.

Thanks for the info guys.

Another question just came up. My maintenance plan just expired and I'm now getting an alert about this "error" every day. Also, every time you go into settings, another alert, even with "No update or news prompts" enabled.

It's made worse with the full yellow status bar that 5.9.9.98 uses. Is there any way to disable the "alert" or better still, the yellow bar? I can manually remove the entry, and viewing Status clears it, but does anyone else find this obnoxious?

Blue Iris does everything I need currently and I'm only looking for a simpler and darker UI which might be long way off so no need to buy a new plan at this point.
