I've been using RDC to connect to other windows pcs on my local network but lately they have been getting issue. Has microsoft changed anything or i thought i read where they where no longer supporting RDC anymore.

Anyway is there a free option that may work better? I self host a lot of things been toying with the idea on trying a self hosted version.

I've tried a few things, including NoMachine and RDC. I've ended up using a KVM over ethernet solution with so-so results; I had to dedicate the one line to this, but since I have 10 ports in my office that's fine, but on top of that, it seems to freeze and/or lose the keyboard/mouse every so often (about a week or so). It's by far given me the best results.

I use Ubuntu RDC (Remmina) with Windows and BSD and Linux desktop servers. Remmina does VNC and RDP.

I have no issues.

I also have used NoMachine. I would recommend it for Windows users.

I do not use Windows 11 desktop to remote to any devices on my network.

A while back switched my automation servers from Windows desktop to Windows servers then to Linux servers.

I still utilize an 16 port KVM with remote network access to all of the clients on it. (old and still works for me).

I used to use a KVM switch but they are hit and miss plus all the extra cables, RDC has been less of a pain lol

Part of my issue is my main display is 5k.

Here all of the "servers" are in the basement on a wire rack. You can utilize the old free version of VNC. Works well inside your network.

I have been having no issues with RDP in general. Using either the original RDP client in Windows, or mRemoteNG manager.

From a very quick piece of research, Microsoft may be deprecating the remote desktop app from the Store - or replacing it with a new version. However, nowhere have I seen anything about MS removing RDP entirely, or removing the classic RDP client...

It's super frustrating when RDC starts acting up, especially when it used to be so reliable. To clear up the rumor: Microsoft hasn't killed off Remote Desktop, but they’ve definitely shifted their focus toward the "Windows App" and cloud-based services, which sometimes leaves the classic local RDC feeling a bit buggy after updates. Since you’re already into self-hosting, you should definitely check out RustDesk. It’s a fantastic open-source, self-hosted alternative that gives you full control without the "corporate" overhead. Another solid free option for local networks is Royal TSA or even Tailscale paired with RDC to stabilize the connection. If you want a really slick web-based experience, look into Apache Guacamole—it lets you access your machines through a browser, and since it's self-hosted, it fits right into your current lab setup perfectly.

You're talking about plain old RDP?

Zero problems here. Use it all day every day probably 200 times per day

What issues are you having?

@Tazz 316 I use Jump Desktop. It works well, and typically only uses the cloud to coordinate the connection with UDP hole-punching, after which the session is peer-to-peer. Speaking of RDP (which I've also had recent problems with—sometimes it'll work once and then you have to reboot the machine to get it to work again), Jump Desktop isn't limited to Pro editions of Windows. It also keeps you on native hardware (same as physically accessing the computer) instead of creating virtual devices that can potentially interfere with operation of your graphics or sound devices.

One thing MicroSloth did a few years back during Windows 10 was restricting RDP to Windows Pro and disabling it in Windows Home. Could that be part of the issue? I used Rust Desktop some months ago, and it was rather time-consuming to get installed back then, and the versions/updates were flying left and right, requiring frequent update cycles.

Accessing your PC via Microsoft Remote Desktop has always been limited to Windows Pro editions.
