A question are indicated setting up vpn and still using features of the nvr and cameras.

I see everyone saying vpn is essential and then also suggesting all Internet access should be blocked to the cams.

How are people working around receiving email alerts (smtp config) and other alerts such as push alerts, ntp etc. I think the key one for me is the email alerts. I have a vpn setup but if I block all Internet access to the devices I'm unable to find a work around to recieve email alerts. I managed to setup a raspberry pi to do ntp (not very well though) so my cams are always slightly out of sync but I can live with that.

Has anyone got a suitable work around for this?

I allow, to the NVR/cams only new connection on port tcp 465/587 to specific CIDR (smtp.gmail.com), while from other VLANs or VPN I can access 'em.

Mmm ... better with the system isolated on its own VLAN, and, if possible, even with an internal NTP server.
