It was warm outside when he came by today, 92 F (33 C). He was checking the traps in our fruit trees.

Was that a real inspector? If so what business is it of his in the first place? Private individual with a couple of fruit trees on private property doesn't constitute "farming" unless, maybe, you're in California.

When I lived in San Jose and Santa Clara 1976 to 2004 it was the Mediterranean Fruit Fly in the Bay Area circa 1981. Helicopters sprayed malathion at night....very creepy.
I remember that! People were complaining about the spraying. Didn't the Governor, or some official drink Malathion on TV to show it was safe?

Yes, it was in the link from my post #5. At the time, he was Gov. Jerry Brown's Chief of Staff.
He died suddenly of heart attack in '93 at age 52....hmm. I guess we'll never know if the malathion played a part in that.
I recall in the mid 50's at night in Fernandina Beach, FL the trucks spraying huge clouds of DDT along the road sides for the mosquitoes.
AFAIK, I haven't grown any extra toes or ears.......so far.

Here in Florida they (county) puts some kind of trap in my neighbors sea grape tree. I see them changing them out every so often
