Viewing RTSP/ONVIF cameras in a browser with sub-second latency (WebRTC) – anyone tried this?

Hi all,

Disclosure: I work at Ant Media, a company that makes streaming server software. I’m posting to ask for feedback and share what we’ve seen, not to sell anything.

A common issue with IP cameras is that RTSP doesn’t play natively in browsers. The usual workarounds (HLS conversion, snapshot refresh) add 5–15 seconds of delay, which isn’t great for live monitoring.

One approach is to pull the camera’s RTSP stream into a media server and re-deliver it over WebRTC, which typically gets latency under a second and plays in any modern browser with no plugin. Ant Media Server can do this. It has a free Community Edition, and you add a camera from the dashboard using either its ONVIF URL (with auto-discovery on the same network) or a direct RTSP URL. The stream can then be watched over WebRTC, HLS, DASH, or LL-HLS.

Some questions for the group:

  • How are you currently viewing your cameras remotely (Blue Iris UI3, go2rtc, VLC, etc.)?
  • What latency do you get, and does it matter for your setup?
  • Which camera brands or codecs give you the most trouble (H.265, for example)?

Happy to answer technical questions. Looking forward to hearing what’s working for you.
