Nearly half the workforce at the office responsible for cleaning up the federal government’s nuclear sites is gone. The Trump Administration offered rounds of buyouts and 312 people walked out the door in a single year from an office that was already hundreds of employees short.
These are MISSION CRITICAL positions handling contaminated soil, poisoned groundwater, and radioactive waste across the country.
Nuclear engineering positions are now 55 percent vacant.
The Department of Energy plans to hire 174 people next year. They lost more than twice that. They gutted the workforce keeping radioactive contamination in check and called it efficiency. The Department of Energy needs to address this. It is unacceptable.
