Unable to move ports on Dahua NVR

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a long time lurker of this forum and found it very helpful when setting up my camera system about 5 years ago. As many, I started out wrong by following Dahua’s instructions and then ended up here following @bigredfish PSA for Dahua POE NVR and never looked back.

I have however found myself in a bit of a pickle the last few days. I decided to add another camera to my NVR4216-16P-4KS2 by using the ‘just plug it in and wait’ method and all was working well. Until… I decided that port 14 wasn’t actually a logical place for this camera to live and I wanted to move it to port 9. So I unplugged camera 9, deleted the entry, restarted the NVR and plugged in my new camera on port 9. And then… nothing. It didn’t want to come down to the bottom of the camera page, no matter how long I waited.

I’ve since tried every trick in the book. Restarting the NVR numerous times with the cam plugged in or not, factory resetted the cam with the hard reset button, unplugged, restarted NVR, replugged, waited… nothing helped. In fact, after the factory reset the camera shows a red cross at the upper section of the page and does nothing with it. Sounds like a password mismatch right? But how can this be on a factory reset? Plus the IP stays at 192.168.1.108 and isn’t assigned a 10.1.1.x. I’ve even taken the new camera down and hooked it up directly to the NVR with a new cable to rule out cable issues, to no avail.

So I thought I’d try to plug in the original camera to port 9 to see if I can get that one back to work. And sure enough it shows up at the top list, including its internal IP of 10.1.1.x and a green checkmark… but doesn’t move to the bottom! (Attached picture). So now I’m stuck and unsure what to do next. Hope to get your suggestions and see if I can untangle this mess. If I’d known I would have just left it at port 14… :(

PS before anybody asks, everything is on the latest firmware:

NVR4216-16P-4KS2: 4.001.0000005.4.R, Build Date: 08-08-2024
DH-IPC-HDW3441TP-ZAS: 2.800.0000000.47.R, Build Date: 2025-02-17

So I take it the 10.1.1.73 shown at top is the original ch9 cam?

Have you hit refresh at bottom of page?

Yes odd that the new camera after a hard reset wouldnt naturally register. You did do a hard reset with the black button inside the SD card compartment?
What model camera is this trouble cam? (originally ch14)

hi Red, thx for the quick reply. Yeah the 10.1.1.73 is the original cam 9, I’ve been hitting refresh like a madman but no joy.

The ‘new’ cam that I initially set up successfully at port 14 is a DH-IPC-HDW3441TP-ZAS and I did the factory reset next to the SD card slot a few times now (more than 30 sec). The camera is good cause it worked the first time and I can also find it when I hook it up to my Unify Poe switch (off course factory resetted It again after that)

This is what I see when plugging in the new cam at port 9. Or port 14 for that matter, same result.

I’ve also reloaded the firmware on the NVR and completely shut it off, including unplugging the power cord. Hoping to avoid a complete factory reset of the NVR, but looks like that may be my final resort…

So that cam is stuck on the default .108 address and won’t adopt the IP or password from the Switch/NVR..? hmmm

Can you login to the camera on .108 (on the external switch) and change the IP to Static 10.1.1.73 with the gateway being the NVR IP?

As soon as you hit Apply, unplug it and then plug it into the #9 port on the NVR

I havent actually tried this but can you highlight the cam in the op pane and use the "Modify IP" button to change it to 10.1.1.73 ?

On NVR Networking

  • Multicast enabled?
  • On TCP/IP tab is Virtual Host enabled? (checkbox)

On Security, Device Discovery enabled?

Thanks for your help. To answer your questions:

I can only change the ip address of the camera on the NVR once it is initialized. So not possible when it’s showing a red cross. Just done that, waiting for the result. In the mean time, I’ve checked these:

  • I don’t have an option for bridge mode under the switch section so don’t think that’ll be enabled
  • multicast was not enabled, have now enabled it. What does this do actually?
  • virtual host is enabled
  • device discovery is enabled

Multicast mostly has to do with streaming to multiple clients, but I'm not a network engineer. I just recall a tidbit from my wayback memory saying it needs to be enabled. :)

Actual LAN IP

It shouldnt matter much
Doesn’t allow me to do that, neither on NVR nor external switch, creates an IP and gateway conflict. Tried it on NVR with gateway set to 10.1.1.1 but it totally disappeared. Now tried it via my external switch, but it also won’t show up once plugged back into NVR.

One thing I noticed after making these changes is that for whatever reason also my indoor intercom monitors don’t show up anymore on the top (VTH2421). They used to be up there all the time before on their 192.168.1.x addresses (connected to my UniFi switch)

Y0u can always use the router IP for the gateway temporarily. As long as youre using the NVR PoE port it shouldnt matter

I wonder about trying to temporarily disconnect the Unify switch so that its not communicating with the NVR?

Something odd in network land...

Rebooted the NVR (again) without new cam connected, then connected cam in port 9. I now see it as 10.1.1.73 but port 37777. And the VTH’s are back too

Seems to be something going on with the internal PoE switch.

I’ve had them fail. Usually in banks of 4 ports.

Still weird
You can view the video feed live?

Nope, but to be fair i was doing this from Safari on my iPad and the preview hardly ever works there. Now moved to my iMac ( no windows available in my house )and I can see other camera's live view from Safari. Unfortunately the new cam has disappeared again from the top view, even after plugging the NVR into my ISP router directly.

Not sure if this is related, but the IE link hardly ever works for me. It seems to be a total lottery when the NVR decides to actually create a link or throw a blank page. Like earlier today I wasnt able to link to cam 1 or 2, only from 3 onwards. Now after rebooting I can access the link for cam 1 again. All while everything is online, recording, and showing green status.

Viewing issues Likely browser mostly. And it (IE button) won’t probably work on a 10.1.1.x camera with port 37777

I’m not good with Macs I’m afraid

Can you disconnect the NVR from the internet completely and see after a NVR reboot if anything changes?

Disconnected NVR from internet and running a direct cable to my Mac. Using Chrome I get better response and live view, although some IE links still don’t work, some do.

Reconnected the cam again after a factory reset, but doesn’t show up at all, either top or bottom.
