I have a group of three cameras all hooked to a Unifi Switch via POE. I also have a WiFi AP and several other cameras hooked to the same switch and they are still working fine. I checked the connections and according to my Unifi app the cameras are present but they refuse to respond. Any suggestions? I believe I have some spare ports available. I unplugged everything and sprayed with DeOxit and resealed the exterior connections. One camera is a PTZ and it goes through it's reset procedure so I believe it's alive.

What happened during the storm?

  • Lightning strikes?
  • Power outages/flickers?
  • Heavy wind and driving rain?
  • Is the switch on a UPS?

Use confirmed good poe switch and cable to test. If not work, Try to do a hard reset to the camera, reset the camera's button for 7-10 seconds. If both not work, camera dead.

I bought a POE injector for this very purpose. It gives you something to fall back on as a test device if you suspect a faulty switch.

BTW - I wanted to follow up on this. The camera's were all OK and not damaged except for one where water ingress into the ethernet connector had corroded the pins. I used a punch down wiring tool and an interface adapter for that camera. Seems like most of the issues were related to movement from the storm loosened the cable connections. The camera's were mounted on a tree that was swaying in in the high winds. I had used the rubber sealing type tape to wrap the connectors but it tends to depress the Ethernet tang in the process and the cables slip out. I have gone to glue type heat shrink and firm pressure while shrinking the tubing. I also have started to use a bit of dielectric grease to keep moisture out if it does get inside. So far since they have been rock solid in performance.

.ps That tree a week later tipped over from damage to the root system some decades earlier. Was very unexpected and a big loss as it was a rather large Burr Oak. I temporarily mounted the cameras on my fence for the time being. I am planning to replace the tree and build a solid mount for the camera's that is hidden back in a corner.
