Could have been ugly because he was obviously tracking the skunk that went under the deck about 45 seconds earlier.

This was going to be the coyote's dinner. He came back up from under the deck yesterday evening. All safe and sound.

I'm not sure the coyote was being too smart chasing a skunk. 
The coyote may not know it, but he dodged a bullet. It would have REALLY ruined his day...heck, the whole week!

I have watched skunks in my backyard intimidate, bully, and run off coyotes, foxes, deer, cats, dogs, racoons and possum's.

We have a bumper crop of those stinking "pole cats" on our farm this year. Never had a problem with them getting near the house until this summer. My 13 y/o dog, who has never shown any interest in these 4-legged striped olfactory assault weapons, found out the hard way that it's a bad idea to get too close. Boy did she stink... for 2 weeks, even after repeated bathing. Bet she never does that again.
We also have Coyotes - LOTS of them. One of them found out what my dog learned the hard way... bet he was kicked out of the pack for a month. Think this is the definition of a REALLY BAD IDEA...
