The entire idea of a dooms day clock is complete garbage IMHO.
First, we don't know what we don't know. Was the Earth any less likely to be struck by a world ending asteroid in 1026 as it is in 2026? No, but no one knew about the risk in 1026. So anyone trying to establish a dooms day clock in 1026 based on their limited knowledge would look like an idiot today. Just like everyone today trying to do it will look like an idiot in 3026 after new "threats" have been uncovered - whatever they might be.
Second, it's human nature to think your current experience is new, unique, or worse than anyone else's experiences throughout time. Is today really any more dangerous now than at any point in history? What about the at the peak of the cold war? I don't think today is more dangerous than those times yet the clock has steadily been set to shorter and shorter times. At this point they simply take away one second every year because they can't do anything else. If they back down the clock now, it proves they were "wrong" about the severity of the situation in years past.
Finally, who give a shit. These people just want to feel important and like hearing themselves talk. If they want to make a difference, yelling "the sky is falling" constantly isn't the way to do it. Eventually people just stop listening.
