Hello everybody! I'd like to introduce you to the Thingino project. it's a free and open source firmware replacement for IP cameras based on the Ingenic processor platform. If you've heard of OpenIPC, imagine that but actually open source, and with a focus on retail devices rather than a box of legos.
You can find Ingenic processors in common brands like Wyze, Wansview, WUUK, and many more. Installation methods vary, One of my primary tasks is finding vendor internal mechanisms for firmware updates and using them to build easy installers when possible. We're a couple years old now but are still a fast moving project with new improvements and features every week, and a welcoming community with official locations on github, discord, and telegram.
We're also huge open source proponents. We have projects making huge headway on dropping the dependency of the vendor's SDKs, with pretty amazing results so far. A dirty secret of embedded chip vendors is that despite giving you a Linux-based OS, they give you closed source blobs for most of the hardware blocks. We're swapping them out as our own replacements reach feature parity, and we have active projects to bring everything to the mainline Linux kernel.
Our firmware provides a great web UI, standards compliant ONVIF (including rtsp back-channel for 2-way audio), rtsp streams (full and sub-stream), on-camera motion detection with various actions, and a lot more. We've got an even more advanced streamer landing soon (available already with a local build) with improvements everywhere, including new protocols like webtorrent and webrtc. Exciting things are afoot for sure.
