UPDATE: The first set of pictures were taken with the 0928 Firmware ... but the Gain controls were changed from what we are used too. Per @EMPIRETECANDY, consider rolling back to 0731 Firmware.


I just got the T54PRO-ZE and wanted to compare the "basic" sensor/lens/processing of it versus the 5442-S3 under low-light conditions.

First, there are people on this forum waayyy more knowledgeable than me (looking at you @steve1225 ... and others) and there is more to cameras than just seeing what type of image one can get when there's aren't a whole lotta photons. But here's my first WAG at trying to answer the specific question if the T54PRO-ZE has improved low-light capability (seems like it does!) and I welcome candid feedback.

I'd also love to see some similar side-by-side comparisons from others ... and please limit that just to low-light performance for this thread.

Note that this is a pretty dim scene (several hours after sunset and it was cloudy/raining, so no moonlight, etc.) so yes, I'm using fairly ridiculous parameters. Specifically, the Exposure was Custom with Shutter at 0-100msec (yep, that means 1/10s shutter speed!), a gain of 100%(!), Iris at 100%, 3D NR of 50, and 2D NR of 25.

Yes, if you setup your cameras using these setting, be sure to post a sign telling any robbers to walk veerrryyyy slowly since otherwise about the only motion you are going to capture with that is ghosts! ;-)

Here's two images from the same time - output is from the same home-grown Perl script which uses ffmpeg to connect via RTSP, and from the stream generates a 1920x1080 HD image with minimal processing besides adding the custom tag and date/time stamp in the top right. NOTE: the 1920x1080 images don't show inline (too big?), so these are resized to 960x540 ... and the 1920x1080 are attached in the next post.

A couple of quick observations when I was playing around with this - specific to this scene, but maybe more broadly.

When you increase the gain on the 5442-S3 from 90 to 100%, the image really falls apart ... so I think internally there is a big jump in the ISO which is pushing the sensor way beyond it's limits. The T54PRO-ZE didn't seem as dramatic.

Pushing the 2D NR level on the 5442-S3 from 25 to 50% did clean things up the noise a bit ... but resulted in the (expected) loss of detail. On the T54PRO-ZE, pushing from 25% to 50% didn't seem to make much difference.

Which kinda suggests to to me that (at least for this scene), the 5442-S3 is at it's limit, whereas the T54PRO-ZE still has some headroom before it falls apart.


But HEY, can we get the image even better/brighter for this application ... and (DUH!) we can!!!

The camera lens is zoomed in about 2/3rd's the way to capture that scene (1650 on a scale that goes to ~2400) ... and it's not uncommon that a vari-focal lens will NOT be constant aperture ... since this requires bigger/heavier lens. I.e. this is why my 70-200/F2.8 camera lens is BIG ... because it's 2.8 at 200mm. Now for a constant aperture lens, you want to put as many pixels on target, since the light gathering is same. And if you end up resizing, you get some noise/quality benefits.

But then I realized (DUH!) that "I could have had a V-8!" ... since it's possible that if I zoom out the lens (getting a bigger aperture), the increased light gathering may more than offset taking a 1920x1080 crop versus resizing the zoomed in 2688x1520 image. I ended up going from 1650 to 550 on the zoom ... and the 1920x1080 crop of the wider image is about the same FOV.

Here's what that look like. And pulling both of the T54PRO-ZE images into Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool and then pushing the exposure, I'd estimate there's about 3/4 of a stop difference. Too bad Dahua doesn't publish a graph showing the aperture versus focal length as I'd love to see if I'm in the ballpark.

BTW, I'm still trying to figure this out, but I think(?) there's something a bit "more funky" about the T54PRO-ZE, since when I use ffmpeg/RTSP (or the snapshot.cgi API call), it appears to be pushing the blacks (and maybe clipping the whites) so the JPEG values are almost all from16-235 rather than 0-255. I've seen this before per this thread and since the color space is compressed, the image looks a bit hazy (more noticeable in images like this) ... plus if I pull it into Photshop, you can "see" this using the Levels tool ... and using the threshold, I can see almost nothing below 16 ... even though there is plenty of dark there.

What's confusing is that you don't see this when using the Snapshot button on the web interface. Incidentally, this generates a (huge) PNG file ... which if I pull the 8,392KByte file into Photoshop, save as a high quality JPEG, it's 920KBytes (and there's barely any difference between them) ... be nice if Dahua gave that as an option. But this has the "full" color space and it visually looked better.

What doubly confusing is ffmpeg reports that it is "yuvj420p (0-255)" ... not "youv420p (16-235)" per this output "Stream #0:0: Video: h264 (High), yuvj420p(pc, smpte170m, progressive), 2688x1520, 6 fps" ... so I'm not sure what is going on - maybe something intermediate in the pipeline?

But I remember @steve1225 saying something about how the internal processing is different with these camera and you can get the "old" way back by setting WDR>50%. That makes the image look like crap ... but then I tried setting HLC to one (the smallest value) and that seemed to fix it - ditto if I turn BLC on, even if I pick the tiniest custom area.

So I'm still trying to figure this one out - could be buffoonary on my part, but seems like something goofy in the image processing pipeline. Related is I'm not impressed by the internal resizing algorithm if you pick a non-native resolution ... wondering if the code has a "Save As" with low quality. And yes, even though it shouldn't affect the RTSP stream, I have Snapshot on the web config turned all the way up to six.

Ummm ... there was some sort of issue posting the 1920x1080 images in the first post, so I resized 'em to 960x540 so you could see them inline there .. and posting the higher-res images as attachments here.

Keep in mind that most here don't care about how bright the static image looks with low light.

Motion with low light is what we care about!

but ok, as you want I reply here...

you should do video comparison with some human movement of both cameras..
best on 1/50 (1/60) or 1/100 (1/120) and gain limited to 50-60..

With 1/10 you didn't even stressed any of the cams.. Noise level on 54IR is not so big on this picture (and this is very noisy cam on higher gains)..

Yes - pictures show that video processing is very different (color recovery on 54PRO kills 54IR). But for CCTV most important are human movement.. and face details...

Yes, totally agree that CCTV's are most important to track movement and be able to identify them.

It does look to me like the 54IR (5442-S3) is pretty stressed even at 1/10s exposure (50% gain was a noisy mess!) ... whereas there is some "hope" with the T54PRO-ZE ... albeit there's certainly some loss of detail in the shadows & grass. And yes, while I like the more brighter/colorful picture (progress being made!), I'd need another two stops of performance to be able to capture movement without introducing some additional light (side-bar that my initial thoughts are the warm light is pretty decent ... but that's not going to pass the WAF - Wife Acceptance Factor).

As you suggested, I'll do some "reasonable" shutter speeds and gains tonight and post those results.

It takes a bare minimum of 1/60 and more like 1/120 or faster to overcome low light motion blur.

Keep in mind Reolink can provide some nice static images too LOL...

We have seen some cams where the static is noisy but clears up with motion.

Just program the light to come on between midnight at 6am and wifey won't see it :lmao:

So here's some pics and videos taken tonight an hour after sunset.

The exposure settings on the 5442-S3 and T540PRO-ZE were identically Manual, 1/50s shutter, 100 gain, 50 2D-NR, 50 3-D NR. Yes, that is a slower shutter and higher gain that desired ... but with the light level here an hour after sunset, it's just too dark to go faster, etc.. I'll try to do a test around sunset using faster shutter speeds and less gain since I know people want to see that ... but I'm really just trying to compare how well these camera do in raw/basic light gathering in a fairly dark scene.

And yes, clearly I could toss some light out there ... but again, I want to see what the sensor/lens/processing is capable of (in color, not IR) without any help.

Both camera's are running at native 2688x1520 resolution (which provides a bit more light gathering due to the larger aperture when zoomed out) and I post-process crop that to 1920HD - links to the 40 second videos from the 5442-S3 and T54PRO-ZE ... bonus was a car drove by just before I walked up the driveway at a regular pace.

Here's a screen capture (resized to 960x540 so should post inline - 1920x1080's attached) - and note while I don't have snazzy yellow shoes like @jmcu, I put on a "color collage" (blue jeans, yellow shirt, (Budweiser) red hat, purple Xfinity bag (with "X" for clarity testing), and green HULK hand - good luck seeing that on the 5442-S3) to help judge that - LOL that I'm a walking Color Checker! ;-)

Obviously the T5442-S3 doesn't have a whole lotta color compared to the T54PRO-ZE. It's also pretty darn noisy ... and gets worse if I crank the gain more ... whereas the T54PRO-ZE doesn't fall apart near as much when boosting the gain, and even higher that 50 ... where it recovers some detail as the shadows are lightened up. I don't know if this is due to better sensor technology and/or maybe the internal ISO scale is different.


BTW, the AUDIO is different between the two - on the 5442-S3, you can hear a dog barking at the start (don't hear this on the T54PRO-ZE) but the car driving by is much louder on the T54PRO-ZE ... not sure what to make of that?!?

They have identical settings at AAC/64000 with 100 Microphone Volume and no Noise filter. Per this post, they are literally right on top of each other, with the 5442-S3 higher up and closer to the roof ... so it seems like it would benefit from some sound echo impinging on the microphone. There was no wind.

I pulled the video directly from the on-board SD card ... and it's almost like the 5442-S3 audio is (somehow?) out-of-sync with the video. I'll have to investigate this more.

Yes, the still pic can be very good on their 0827 fw, night as daytime, but we test not good, have blurry after human walking there. The 0928 fw we are using now have a balance on it, so night time a little dark under manual mode. But AUTO way can be brighter.




First 2min is auto mode
its darker Switched to manual mode (0-25ms, 0-62 gain), so gain 100 = now 62 in manual mode. This is the balance that we made.

While I need to do more testing, I find that the T54PRO-ZE seems to take gain boost (even up to 100%!) very well whereas the 5442-S3 gets noisy at the top-end.
This assumes you have a shutter speed that provides at least some illumination ... and it's pretty wild to slide that gain over to really light up the scene, have rich colors, and minimal noise/compression artifacts.

And yes, I'm in manual mode ... so it sounds like 100 gain on the 5442-S3 is "equivalent" to 62 gain on the T54PRO-ZE ... which would kinda explain how "good" it is - thanks for the info @EMPIRETECANDY

Sounds like I need to do a test with gain=100 on the 5442-S3 and gain=62 on the T54PRO-ZE.

Yes, that is right, so can use back the 0731 fw if prefer manual settings, will get better color pics.

0928 Firmware prefer for Auto Setting. Good for newbie.
0731 Firmware Prefer For Manual Setting.Good for skilled users.

I upload both fw on this link for downloading.

Thanks for the tip @EMPIRETECANDY and I just down-revved back to the 0731 firmware ... and yes, similar to the classic Spinal Tap Reference, the gain control now goes to 11!

Holy crap I can really light up my front yard now ... albeit the noise does increase ... but the "62" limitation in the 0928 seems a bit limiting ... plus anyone doing "manual" presumably knows what they are doing. I would strongly encourage you to put a "true" 0-100 scale back in for gain in future firmware ... because I'll trade-off some additional noise to bump that shutter up.

I'll do some more testing of the T54PRO-ZE with 0731 firmware versus 5442-S3 ... but super quick first impression is this makes the T54PRO-ZE looks even better in comparison to the 5442-S3! ;-)

UPDATE: I can kinda see/understand why from a marketing/sales perspective that you "redid" the scale since yea, once you go past 62 (on the 0731 firmware), the noise really does increase ... and I can envision people doing this, seeing the noisy image, and saying "this camera sucks" ... so maybe have something on the gain bar that says "using high values will brighten an image, but may introduce undesirable noise."

It's kinda like cameras that have an ISO range ... but there's an "expandable" range that you can unlock ... which means you must be really desperate for photons to use that.
