Replacing a failing Dahua bullet cam with something stable

I have a Dahua IPC-HFW1831E bullet cam which has been freezing regularly, even with the latest available firmware, and I'm ready to give up and replace it. Restarting it solves the issue, and I have daily restarts scheduled, but it still happens. I also have an Amcrest IP8M-2597E which from what I can tell might be the same camera, and it works great, but I'm unable to find that model now (1/1.8" sensor) - all of the current Amcrest cameras seem to have 1/2.x" sensors.

Is there a comparable camera with a great sensor that is stable and worth upgrading to? I'm a little skeptical of Dahua firmware after this experience.

I have tried a different cable (though not inside). I have not tried setting it to factory defaults. You think that might actually help?

Best practice is to factory reset before and after a firmware update, so if you didn't do that, it could likely be the reason.

Is the camera connected to the internet? If so maybe it has been compromised.

Thanks. It's not on the internet - just on a private network.

That's good.

Is there an SD card in the camera? If so, a failing card or a full card can cause this as well.

Hopefully it is just corrupted firmware that a factory reset fixes!

No sdcard - I'm using a synlogy NAS to record over ethernet.

Hi @ipslascam

Depending on your budget, I would consider getting a newer camera from Andy before the prices goes up ( very soon due to DDR prices )

And yes it does look like many vendors are going with smaller sensor models now

FYi - for reference, here's the spec sheets

Most of the cameras are stable, in terms of long term reliability. There have been a couple of specific models with a poor reliability record, but most of them keep going "forever" with only occasional random failures. I'm still using a cheap Chinese market camera that's about 8 years old, and have a few more in the closet that still work. I haven't seen any reliability complaints with the 5442/541 series cams, which are the most recommended models on the forum. These are 4 MP cams. If you absolutely need 8MP, the 5842/581 cams give a sharper daylight image, but a somewhat diminished low light image which is why most of us here choose the 4MP models, but the night image with the 8MP version isn't all that much less good. There's a difference but it's not huge.
