Purpose of camera micro sd card?

I'm new to security camera world. I will be putting a Dahua system together with a mix of Turret starlight camera and an NVR. I would like to know what is the purpose of a micro sd card in the cameras and what is it use for? Can you use the cameras without them?

for backup and on some to keep logs....yes they can be used without them, however, they are so cheap, it would be really silly not to install...
 
Now that I think about it I plan on installing about 16 -18 turret cameras on my house. From what I have read you have to disassemble the camera to installed the SD card. The cameras will be installed between 8 and 20 feet up and It will be a PITA to replace the SD cards in the cameras once they are mounted. If they work without them and the SD cards are just used for back up I probably won't installed them. I will look into using a cloud service to back up my video. I'm not their yet but I'm getting close to the age now where going on a ladder 20 ft in the air is not a good idea..

Install high quality cards at least 64gb and it will last for years recording on motion...they sell high endurance cards for this purpose..

Ok Thanks. Since I don't have a system yet I haven't thought about the settings. I don't want to start any arguments or debates but for the guys who have had cameras systems for a while do you prefer having your cameras set to motion record or continuous record? Besides the storage issue if you continuously record... what are a few pros and cons of each. Right now I'm leaning towards continuous record.

there are many threads that discuss this...
if you use a third party vms you can record to the sd card using motion and the PC continuously...while you may be able to do this with an NVR using workarounds you will likely loose some function like motion markers in the timeline...those who use standalone NVRs will be able to give you more info..

I'm a newbe so my set up will be as simple as possible. Cameras, PoE ethernet cables to PoE nvr and a HDMI cable connected to a dedicated 4K TV. I want to learn the basics first then maybe in a year or two I will get into the more technical stuff..

setting up a pc nvr is no more complicated than a standard nvr...its not going to be plug and play, you need to adjust settings..
