About a year ago @PeteJ pointed me towards this product that has POE in, POE out, and 12 V out, for powering stuff like an IR illuminator in parallel with a POE camera, off of a single POE cable run:

I haven't had a chance to try one out yet, but I did gripe about the $30 price last year, and this morning I stumbled upon this $18.49 competitor:

I've ordered one of each so I can compare. I could use at least 5-6 of these in my home setup. But I do wish there were a waterproof version.

Any other options out there? Note that I don't need another simple 12 V extractor; I need a product that does POE passthrough, so the downstream RJ45 carries full POE.

I, and others, had been hacking up cameras to bypass the protection diode on their 12 V barrel jacks, to extract 12 V from the camera with a gender changer, but that works only when you know where that diode is, and obviously it voids the warranty, and you run the risk of breaking your camera.

They’re basically free on the direct from
China sites.
Link, please? And these are POE passthrough, not just 12 V extractors?

Oops I didn’t see the passthrough requirement, that could raise the price because rarity but not BOM. You can just split the barrel and run camera on 12v. “Poe splitter” on AliExpress.

Edit: ok would need to reinject so these will always cost more. Your camera still has a barrel though.

e.g. I'd want the functionality of the two products I linked in my OP, but with this type of form factor, but also with a gland on the plug side:

Yeah, I did the 12V split thing the first time I wanted this functionality, but it ends up being a contraption, with many possible points of failure.

The diode bypass is mechanically the most elegant, but not always possible.

For an extra $5 a pop more you could put that one in a waterproof box with mounting ears and cable glands (or similar):

I might go with something like this:

since it's a bit easier to open and service. Every time I think I've closed up a box, and will never need to go into it again, I find one more reason to open it up.

I've got a bunch of fixes to do in two locations, and I want to enclose both a POE-powered-POE-switch as well as at least one of these POE passthrough extractors, so I gotta figure out the right size box. And then it'll be too small and then I'll have to rip it all out and do it again. :banghead:
