Shopping Dells outlet and finding some pretty decent spec'd 5000 MTs, but Dell shows a 4Tb drive limit. Virtually every model there says either 2Tb or 4Tb HDD size max. Dells CSR chat confirms. Is this a real thing? My old Optiplex 3040 with an i5-6500 isn't cutting it any more, but at least it could handle a 6Tb drive!
Space isn't an issue but its in a (ventilated) cabinet so heat could be.
What am I missing?

Why isn't a 6th gen cutting it anymore? Some here run 30plus cameras on a 4th gen just fine.

Not saying you shouldn't update, but maybe there is a setup issue that is the real culprit?

Started with version 4 and it idled at around 70%cpu with 7 2mb cams. But maxed out on trying to export video or virtually anything else. Put up with that for ~8 years.
After reading about sub streams I upgraded to v6.0.3.4 and preview windows to sub stream. After startup it is now idling around 35-40%cpu, but after a day it’s generally showing 100% cpu or crashed completely. I switched over last night to see 100% cpu, so I disabled all 7 cams, 1 at a time, after 3-4 minutes still showed 100% cpu. ‍
I had the pc rebooting daily at 4:00am, but v6 won’t survive a reboot, won’t start on power up. I have read that starting as a service can fix this but wife wants to see a ui when she switches to cam input, so that’s that, lol.
I have been through the steps to minimize cpu utilization (direct to disk etc). Certainly possible there’s a configuration issue somewhere, but I’ve always been more of a hardware than software geek. If it doesn’t work, throw more hardware at it! FWIW, this pc does only have 8gb ram.

Yeah something isn't right. Seven 2MB cams should be single digit CPU.

You are running direct to disk and substreams?

Turn off hardware acceleration in each camera and globally.

If you disable all cams, is the CPU at 0%. If so, then enable each cam one by one and see which one is the problem and then delete that camera and re-add in BI.

If that doesnt fix it then you likely have a bad graphics driver.

Nailed it! Update must have tried to install a video driver and tanked part way in. In any case reinstalling a proper driver seems to have sorted it. Thanks!
