A very dangerous (and common) time for lightning to strike is just as the rain from what seems like a safely-distant cloud begins to hit your location. The charge that's built up suddenly has enough potential to break down the air's insulating capability as that rain makes the path easy enough to ionize. You think you're safe, and then zap! I've had this happen right near me twice when deciding it's time to go out and roll up the windows in my car! The one time was pretty spectacular. It hit the line right near a transformer just across the street. It blew, then the one a few poles down blew, then the one a few poles down from it blew, and so forth. Pretty amazing! Scared the crap out of me.
