California imports the majority of its petroleum, relying heavily on foreign sources due to its status as an "energy island" with no pipelines connecting it to major U.S. refining regions. In 2024, 64% of crude oil used by California’s refineries came from foreign countries, up from 56% in 2021. The top sources are Iraq (21%), Brazil (20%), Guyana (16%), and Ecuador (14%), according to the California Energy Commission.
Imports have surged recently due to refinery outages and planned closures. In May 2025, California’s total petroleum product imports reached 279,000 barrels per day (bpd)—the highest since 2021—driven by supply crunches at Chevron, PBF, Valero, and Phillips 66 refineries. A significant portion of these imports came from South Korea (187,000 bpd) and India (39,000 bpd),

The USS Tripoli (LHA 7), a U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship has been ordered to move from the western Pacific to the Middle East to join forces involved in the war against Iran.
The Tripoli, loaded with an air combat element of F-35Bs, V-22s, H-53s, and AH-1s along with 2,500 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is a force multiplier wherever it’s deployed. But the question as the ship has just passed through the Strait of Malaca near Singapore is how it will be used by CENTCOM once it reaches the North Arabian Sea in about a week from now.
Instead of destroying Kharg Island's oil resources due to the adverse effect that would have on energy markets and the price of gas domestically, the Trump Administration could order CENTCOM to seize it. And the ideal option to attempt that based on assets in the region is the Marines of the 31st MEU.
But what would that operation look like and what are the risks?

My gut is that we have boots on the ground now, Seals, Delta? etc.
Guessing we'll see Marines in 5-10 days, they take control of the island. Trump announces victory..
BUT... now we have to own it and manage it and there are still missiles flying, insurgents, etc. We'll be there for months if not years.
Again just thinking out loud, I obviously have no proof. Left a message with trump and Bibi for clarification, will advise if they get back to me
