I have general questions regarding detection of rodents. I have noticed signs of mice and actually caught a couple in my garage/basement. I can't figure out how they are getting in. I would like to set a camera to see if I can spot the entries/exits. Need some advice from someone who has had success.

I have taken a good long look at the house for possible entry locations. Both inside and outside. I found nothing. I re-sided the house a couple of years ago and paid a lot of attention to sealing the foundation and windows. But I may have/must have missed something.
I have a Blue Iris wired system around the house. If there is a better inside solution I am open.
What kind of camera did you use. I was also thinking of a battery powered trail cam type of set up that can be easily moved around inside. But I don't have a clue what to look for.
I originally thought they were hitch hiking on the car. If they are, I can't figure out how.
What settings are you using? IR or low light? What should I look for.?
I have set up a couple of snap traps but I think the mice are onto me. They avoid those like death. I have had remarkable success with live traps even sitting right next to the snap traps. I catch a couple a month in the live traps but they don't seem to help in the long term.
There is surprising little information on the internet.
Goals: Get rid of them and seal the ingress/egress long term.
Keep them from damaging the house and car.

If this sounds like a fools errand tell me why. I am almost ready to hire a pro.
I am willing to spend some money on an effective method.

Sadly these cameras really are not set up for that and success can be hit or miss.

Personally I would use a thermal camera.

I have a rat problem near the house foundations.
The correct way to handle this is to seal all entry points, however, this is an old house with a lot of cracks ant sealing all of them will cost more than I want to invest.
I placed a few traps and rat poison in the area where I suspect rat activity and sealed a few old unused sewer pipes (that was easy to seal).
I also placed a Zigbee PIR sensor, to get notification when something moves there.
I rarely get notifications, but when I do, I don't know what moved there (maybe a cat or a rat or something else).

I don't want hardwired camera...

Rat poop on the garage door.
Rat poop in the air filter.

It's time to take care of that before it becomes expensive to fix.

I set up an ultrasound thing under the hood and a camera in the garage to see if it's efficacious.

Motion only can take care of under the hood but not garage.

But the stock Yolov5 that comes with CodeProject-AI 2.2.4 only has cats and dogs.

I have a rat infestation in my apartment but am having a hell of a time catching them on camera. I've hired people to help, and we have these cameras up: Montavue 8MP Smart Motion Varifocal Turret Camera - AI Functionality, Smart Motion Detect, 4x Zoom, 165ft IR Night Vision- Montavue MTT81130-V-AISMD. This footage is cropped and I slowed it down to 0.001. The things are everywhere (recently it's picking up humans on cameras that aren't near a window--no humans in the apt). I know it looks like nothing but I swear, they are there. Sometimes, even slowed down to 0.001...

Hey All.
I am wondering if anyone has tried to use outdoor night vision cameras to look for rodents outside their homes? We have tried many cameras and trail cams all with different but unidentifiable results.

We currently have 2 - SDETER Outdoor Security Camera Full 1080P Color Night Vision which uses V380 pro software for viewing captured images and video. We cannot tell if there are rodents in the pics or not.

We also purchased a WOSODA Trail Game Camera, 16MP 1080P Waterproof Hunting Scouting Cam for Wildlife monitoring with night vision LY123 but have yet to get any pics at...

In the boat storage business in N. Wisconsin, the outfit I worked for would load the boat compartments up with Walmart Dryer Sheets ( think Bounce). Because of the critters keen sense of Smell, it would drive them away in these large pole buildings with places Mice and Raccoons etc could get in. It's one step. Probably not full the answer. My buddy went crazy with 5 gal pail traps with water inside. I'll have to find out what his final outcome was.
They were getting into his basement somehow.
 
Oddly enough, the Amcrest IP5M- 1197EW in my back porch on fairly default settings,
was detecting the mouse, mice when they took a stroll down the main aisle.
I didn't know I had any until by dumb luck i was seeing why there was so much motion detection in a dead quiet storage area. ( turned out to be mostly the changing light with Sun and Clouds)
So i screwed with it to be less particular, and the motion annoyance went away but so did the mouse detection.
 
An older dahua camera with "dumb" IVS should trigger on the rats/mice. If it has object detection (human+vehicle) it won't work. An older 2MP starlight should be good for this, like a 5231 or 4231 series. It's too bad that the newer smart cameras are so dumb and can't trigger on animals.

I have been using a couple of cheap Tapo C120s to monitor rodent activity. At night I use IR and their Motion and Line-Crossing detection settings. I turn off these settings during the daytime to avoid false triggers. They've been out there doing this for a year or more without problems. I usually check for any recordings each morning to see if I had visitors and so I know if I need to empty traps, etc.

If the camera is placed somewhere without a direct outside view where shadows and leaves etc can trip it, should be no problem using good old fashioned Motion Detection.

I use it in my carport and back porch to compliment IVS becasue I dont have any external movement in those two areas.

I use a couple Amcrest IP2M-941b cameras that I use with Blueiris. I use Poe power splitters to power them and have long ethernet cables to reach an available RJ45 Poe powered receptacle. I have frequently moved them around my barn and often on the floor to monitor critter movement. They work fine on default settings with IR working well at night. With BI, you can easily use the pan, tilt and built in digital zoom.

My Old Boss at Port Barrington Marina, used a folding chair, a bottle of Jack, and a 12 gauge, to find the Coons that tore up the 30 foot yacht's interior and made a nest out of the torn up cushions. They shit were they eat. Bad manners.
He got one after a few nights.
Later that week day I was walking back to the shop from the gas dock and he came rushing past me with his shotgun and shot a round off into the storage barn between two stacks of Bombardier Snow mobiles ( new in the crates).
He got off a second round further into the barn, and got the coon but he also got an Everest 500 ...:) Needless to say it had to go to the body shop after we uncrated it.
I don't think this will help your cause.
But it remains a last resort option. :)
