I purchased the IPC-B54IR-Z4E-S3 primarily to evaluate its nighttime license plate recognition capabilities, and it has exceeded my expectations.
During testing under ideal conditions, I was able to capture a barely readable license plate from a moving Amazon delivery truck at approximately 187 feet away at night. This distance is well beyond the recommended LPR range and far exceeds what conventional pixel-density calculations would suggest for reliable license plate recognition.
To be clear, the plate was not crystal clear. It required digital zooming and careful examination, and I would describe it as barely readable rather than reliably readable. However, the fact that enough detail was preserved to identify the plate at all from such an extreme distance is impressive and speaks to the quality of the camera's optics, large 1/1.8" sensor, and image processing.
The 8mm–32mm motorized vari-focal lens provides excellent flexibility for dialing in the field of view, while the camera's strong low-light performance helps maintain usable detail in challenging nighttime conditions.
I would not recommend using 187 feet as a design target for license plate recognition, as proper LPR deployments should still follow recommended pixel-density guidelines. Nevertheless, this test demonstrates that the IPC-B54IR-Z4E-S3 is capable of delivering surprisingly useful detail well beyond its expected operating range when conditions are favorable.
