this all started after I tried to do the update on that day, the screen went into that white color with extra large fonts and nothing responded other than Control alt delete and I was unable to stop the task so I rebooted after several tries that allowed me to stop the BI but I still had that weird desktop.
I was unable to click on desktop icons to open chrome or BI eventually I was able to do the following to get most of the desktop short cuts to work

If you can’t see any icons at all, they may have been hidden.- Right-click on an empty space on your desktop.
- Select View from the context menu.
- Click Show desktop icons (ensure it is checked).
