How to optimize Blue Iris for Amcrest IP8M-T2499EW 4k recording

Hi all, I am setting up Blue Iris to replace my existing Nest Camera system, and I picked up an Amcrest IP8M-T2499EW camera. I updated to the latest firmware out of the box.

I have successfully added it to BI and I am recording etc. So it's working...but there is a LOT of lag between clicking an alert thumbnail and the video playing the alert (which was triggered from motion detection) video.

Upwards of 15 seconds.

Is this normal? I know 4k is a ton of pixels...but even running off of the machine directly I see lag.

I am using direct to disk recording but I am unsure where else I should look to optimize unless it's just dropping the resolution. PC and camera are all wired.

My host pc specs are:
i7-7700
16 GB RAM
126 GB SSD (Windows and Blue Iris Database and New)
1 TB (archive)
I have Intel Quicksync enabled - and confirmed that the camera is using it.
The Amcrest is not using h.265 it is using h.264

I have connected my Nestcams to BI and clicking on an alert is fast. The clip pops right up and starts playing.

I know that the Nestcams are much lower resolution, but is it really the 4k that is causing this lag?

Can anyone provide areas where I can optimize to get a better experience viewing the clips?

Please read the IP Cam Talk Cliff Notes and other items in the IP Cam Talk Wiki. (read on a real computer, not a phone). The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Quick start
1) If you do not have a wired monitored alarm system, get that first
2) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras if you need good low light cameras.
3) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
4) Do not use wifi cameras.
5) Do not use cloud storage
6) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
7) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
8) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
9) Do not use reolink, ring, nest, Arlo cameras (they are junk), no cloud cameras
10) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
11) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)
12) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
13) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 8ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
14) Use a router that has openVPN built in (Most ASUS, Some NetGear....)

Strange There is a frame interval (IFRAME) on the sub stream but no frame interval on the main stream.

As a side note: if you are not using the sub stream from the camera , turn it off.

QUESTIONS

1) are the recording set to record continuous on disk in BI ?
2) are your recording set to record in BVR format ?
3) what program are you access the alert from BI,UI3, Phone app ?
3) on the record tab what are the combine or cut video each values ?

The alert thumbnail takes upwards of 15 seconds to pop up the video on the BI console ? This is very strange.
What virus scanner are you using ?
Are you sure that the virus scanned is not checking BI folders ?

No no...when I click an alert thumbnail, the corresponding video takes 15 seconds to load and play.

No 3rd party scanner. Just the one w/ Windows

Also I turned off Smart Codec and IFRAME appeared!

that is very slow. Very strange .
When the video is loading what is the CPU load as shown on the BI console or in the windows task manager processes.
Did you pick the bit rate of 5888 KB/s on the camera.

Please provide screen shots of
1) the windows task manager process tab with the GPU columns sorted by the CPU time (most at the top)
2) The BI status clip storage tab
3) The BI status camera tab
 
The 5888 Kb/s was a value I did not enter/change

1-3 attached.

I assume I'll have to test with new clips as they are generated with the modifications I did via all the suggestions here.

Not sure what is going on.
For a test disable the Nest cameras, reboot the BI PC, wait about for at least 10 minutes and test.

FYI: I do not like crap running on my BI PC disable Skype and Microsoft store.
what is the IP address of the PI PC ?
We need to work on your space allocation after this get fixed. Make sure that is enough free space on the C drive for windows. At least 20 GB....
 
@SouthernYankee Thanks for your help here.

I checked and the tweaks we did earlier in this thread helped my 4k alerts a LOT...I am not at home and was able to check my alerts on that 4k camera and they popped up in my browser in about 1.5 seconds. Thank you!

Re: everything else, I can go in an clean up what runs on that PC when I get home tonight.

What do I need to do in terms of space allocation?

Also: Since you've been so helpful...any thoughts on this thread I posted earlier this week? I am not getting / seeing Thumbnails in my timeline.
 
I would move the New folder off of the SSD drive. I would put the new folder on the E: hard drive and not use the stored folder. Set the new folder to delete the files when space is used. Set the new folder to 3400 GB. Never allocate 100% of a drive always leave at least 10% free. set the stored folder to zero size.


I am not that good on the motion detection, I additional had my cameras set to do motion detection in the cameras, I have since moved to simple motion detection in BI.

Windows Defender counts, you must exclude all BI folders from it....just like any other antivirus.

Great guidance. I'll got make some tweaks to storage. Can you tell me the thinking behind putting new on my 1TB HDD vs keeping it on the fast access SSD that I have BI and Windows on? I would think I would want to have those more recent files on faster access storage. I guess that's not the case?
