Actually, I find that to be quite genius.

The alternative I would have gone with, though, would be a jackshaft opener.

It would have more fun to just cut the duct and stick it thru, Then see if the furnace can help keep the grease warm and also lubricate it with cat hair and dust bunnies.

I've seen some newer types that don't use the chain at all, they connect directly to the axle that has the springs on it.
