G3 ColorVU Night Settings

I'm now working on the night settings on my G3 ColorVU cameras (DS-2CD2387G3-LIS2UY/SL). When setting Day/Night Switch to 'Night' does that make the White Supplement Light stay on all the time and in full brightness? (I like to leave the light on all night - not in 'Smart' mode)

When my security light turns on, will the White Supplement Light still stay on and remain in full brightness?

Also, should I change the exposure time from 1/50 to 1/25 and lower the 'Limit Gain' from 100 to around 70. At the moment, when someone walks at night, there is over exposure.

You need atleast 1/60 at night. I go for 0-6. Unfortunately, you bought an 8MP camera with just a 1/1.8 sensor.

Not sure about your lights, I don’t own one, but if overexposed , going from 1/50 to 1/25 will be worse.

As mentioned, you need faster shutter not slower. 1/120 is generally needed to remove most ghosting of moving targets.

But if you just want it “bright” set it to Auto

If you want it to not turn on the white light on the camera at night, leave it in "day" mode. Auto would utilize a photo sensor or something that would click the white light on or off depending on lighting conditions. Setting it to "night" mode would keep the white light on indefinitely until you turn off the light manually. If you want the light to stay on but will raise and lower intensity then you would need to turn on the "smart" setting.

Now.... there is another spot that says "smart" which is here....

This is for the "hybrid illumination mode" which starts out in IR (black and white) and then will turn the white light on causing the image to be in color.... It will revert back to IR later. Note that you will need to set up a type of detection as the detection is what triggers the light to come on and switch to color mode. It will go back to IR (black and white) when the object detected is no longer in the camera's field of view.

The G3 that you have in my opinion is a mixed bag when trying to get a good color image at night if you decide not to use without the white light on.
Here is the best I got.


For me, changing the shutter speed and gain on this camera will result in a worse color image that is unusable. Seems to me it would "bypass" the AI-ISP part and just showing what the image sensor itself is able to do resulting in an image similar to the G2 version of the camera. Note that I live out in the rural part of the city so there are no street lights or anything around that would light up the area so your mileage will differ if you are in an urban area with more lighting or you have the white lights on.
