I run Smart Illum at night so IVS can trigger the white LED's.
That's really the only reason I own it.

Otherwwise if running B&W/IR all night I'll just run the 5442 with a better image

Thanks for all your efforts. I think the last two videos look good. Not great, but not bad.

I definitely see an improvement in the first one in comparison with the previous 5459 video.

So what is the consensus on which 8MP turret camera to get at this point for low light? I have a 2 of the color4k-t's a 2.8mm and 3.6mm and they have been good but I need to order more cameras. I do like the idea of the added IR as one of the locations I would prefer not to have a light on all night and there are no street lights.

The other option is the 5442-ZE-S3 if I can still find it for sale and not at some crazy markup, although I would still prefer 8MP for further identify range.

Or just wait but not sure if the new models are coming out soon?

I dont need to worry about AI features as im using Frigate.

I’ve not been impressed with any of the 4K/8MP cameras other than the 4K/T

They need a bigger sensor than 1/1.8

Same problem with 4MP cams with 1/2.8 sensors.

Its for the front of the house under a covered porch. Where I am going to put the camera there is a walk way where I would like to be able to see about 20-25ft from the camera as people walk up.

I don't leave the porch lights on all night since its large porch. So that's why I was looking at the 5442-ZE as well. I could add a motion sensor as I do have a Lutron caseta switch for the porch lights.

The other location would be right next to a side entrance where there is a flood light already, so that one I could go either way.

I’m not sure identify ranges you’re talking about are correct. 4MP 1/1.8 2.8 and 3.6mm have same linear pixel density(identify) as those same focal lengths focused on an 8MP 1/1.2” sensor. The 8MP just gets bigger FOV.

I’m a newb here so maybe the industry misrepresents some of these numbers as “effective” like they do sensor size and I just don’t know about it, but math isn’t mathing here.

If you use frigate and home assistant, it is trivial to have your camera light up only when a person crosses a zone of interest. You just need enough light to detect a person at 12-15ms and 50-60 gain which isn’t a lot of light but it’s also not zero.

^that has been my experience as well. The 4MP and 8MP Identify distance is roughly the same. I think one should only go with rhe 8MP if they have enough light to run in color or are ok with the white LED.

But but but… 8 megagixels has to be better than only 4, I mean it’s twice the megagixels!

So your saying a 1/1.2 8mp vs a 1/1.8 4mp there is no difference identify distance? Both at 2.8mm.

Would not a larger sensor and higher mp have longer identify distance at the same focal length unless I'm missing something?
