Comments on the HDBW4231F-AS

I purchased a HDBW4231F-AS and I just set up a test vs. the LTS version of the Hikvision 2MP DS-2DE2A204W-DE3. Here is a snapshot from Blue Iris from each camera. The Hikvision picture looks much better to me during daytime. We'll see how they compare at night. Since the Dahua is ultra low light with Starvis, I'm expecting it to be better at night. I'll post pictures after dark.

In the meantime, what do you think about these daytime shots? Cameras are set with default settings.

Lots of variables, for starters that tree limb isnt helping anything right in front o the lens..do you have WDR enabled on that Dahua? looks washed out like WDR..

This is just a temp location on a little rig I built to test 3 different cameras. The Hikvision has WDR (50) and the Dahua has WDR (15).

I’m constantly disappointed with Dahua’s WDR in most locations... would be interesting to see both with WDR off ... the HIK certainly looks better in that shot

hmmmm same washout... dunno, I guess play with Saturation and Exposure a bit.. clear difference though.... assume same bitrate? I know I can see a visual difference in low 2048 vs say 8192 on my IP cams...

I see that the HiK is rated [email protected] vs the Dahua at .009@ F2.0 ... big difference in performance

The Dahua is 25 FPS @ 4096, the Hikvision is 30 FPS @ 8192. Based on their spec, would you expect the Hikvision to be better at low light considering the Dahua has Starvis? Thanks

I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares. The 4231 is something I was looking to use at entry doors. The DS-2DE2A204W-DE3 is competing against the 5231-ZE for perimeter duty. I like the PTZ aspect of the Hikvision but if the 5231 performs as well during the day, I'll probably go with the 5231 since it should be better at night. PTZ would be a nice extra to have but night performance is important.

I tend to agree with you on the dahua WDR, seems you have to do a lot of jerking around to get things set.

The Dahua to me looks like it has dome glare of some sort in each sample.

I just set WDR to 8 on my cams, and it works for me. YMMV of course.

Not sure where glare would come from. The cameras are mounted on a rig under a shaded porch with no direct sun. As for the Dahua WDR... the scale is 0-100 and your recommendation is 8. I have it turned off in night mode. Appreciate your reply!

Looks like a little too much Sharpess on the Hik. The edges of everything in the image are over-emphasized I feel.
But yes the Dahua looks washed out, like the HDR setting is too high of a number. Though 8 and 15 are certainly low HDR setting numbers so there may be no setting that improves it substantially.

There are advantages to the washed out view. Subjectively it looks uglier, but if you look at details in the dark portions of the image, like between the tires and the wheel wells on the cars, you can see better dark definition in the Dahua. Same with night, the Hik has pitch-black in a lot of the view where you have zero definition, and the Dahua shows some detail in these areas.

It would add to the long term value of this thread if you added the model number to the onscreen overlay of each camera. (The Dahua has a decent text overlay menu that would accomplish this).

Another thing to watch out for, the Dahua daylight screenshot has sharp focus on the tree leaves, so it may have auto-zoomed slightly nearer than you would want.

Thanks. I'm leaning toward the 5231 over the Hikvision. Where these will be used is very dark and I think it can handle that better. I'll miss the PTZ of the Hikvision though.
