I saw this article in my local paper discussing whether they wanted a local business to have an ALPR camera on the street.

It is in a far more residential area that my camera, but like many here I already have this and the ALPR database to track. I purposefully don't tell people about it because some get skittish.


 
Of course, the article is about Flock Safety. They've recently gained a lot of notoriety because their service is essentially a massive centralized surveillance system that is very easily queried. People are concerned about it being used for mass surveillance. I totally agree. The risk of widespread abuse only goes up the bigger Flock gets.

This is very different from running your own cameras and storing your own video and license plate data privately. If the police want your data, they need to come to you with a good reason and/or a warrant.
