Your smart TV is taking 7,200 secret screenshots every hour

If nothing else, it's just a principle thing to me. I don't like being spied on.

People seem to forget that developing countries are outpacing the West by a huge margin

The way I look at it is that we got a lot of cheap stuff, and now we have to pay for it. We were stupid, and now we pay the price.

Your smart TV is taking 7,200 secret screenshots every hour

I do simply block my TV from accessing the Internet. If you must stream, you can use the TV as a monitor for a streaming device that can't spy on OTA, satellite, and DVD devices. It's convenience vs. blocking big brother from spying. I'm willing to take the inconvenience, but I suspect that's...

Western Digital is already sold out of hard drives for all of 2026 I can't help thinking that in a few years there will be a lot of memory sticks and disk drives on the used market cheap.

Your smart TV is taking 7,200 secret screenshots every hour

I have a TIVO, DVD player and satellite receiver and use the smart google TV only as a monitor that keeps begging to be connected to the Internet. The TIVO can report to its mothership what I'm watching from it, but I can't imagine how it can report any activity related to the satellite...

Mine might be taking the screenshots but it can't send them anywhere. Doesn't show any ads either.

You made me look them up :). They're based in Madrid and I didn't see any connection to NBC, BBC, or any other broadcaster.

How the Olympics Are Mixed LIVE 4,000 Miles Away

Nice info! I've been thinking that there must be one heck of a big and complex infrastructure in Italy, even with NBC doing the final mix over here. I think it's pretty obvious that the individual countries don't have their own cams for the actual event coverage. The ice rinks, ski slopes...

Memory Card Availability and Costs - Wow!

I'm being convinced that the data centers are the cause of the hardware cost and supply problem. Electricity costs, too, and an article about that gave me more insight into the big picture. "An average household has 21 Wi-Fi-connected devices, according to the Data Center Coalition." Wow, I...

    Blue Iris on Linux

Has anybody tried to run BI under Wine on Linux? I'd like to know if it would work, but too lazy to try it myself (hey, at least I'm honest).

    Your Phone.

^^^^^^ Interesting video, and it points out a lot more tracking and data collection than I had imagined. From it I shut off some settings I didn't know existed. I'm not at all happy with the all too typical overselling and exaggeration. He "guarantees" that I have some of the worst offending...

The FAA has abruptly CLOSED the airspace around El Paso for TEN DAYS

But is the government explanation true? I can imagine a few things other than a balloon that they'd rather not disclose.

The FAA has abruptly CLOSED the airspace around El Paso for TEN DAYS

Here's an explanation starting with a government announcement, reported by an often inflammatory media outlet. Trump administration shoots down party balloon with laser after mistaking it for cartel drone in El Paso airspace chaos

    AI Good and Bad

An different article that builds on Matt Shumer's. Another good read, and one of its comments brings up a good counterpoint: "Sorry but this reads like insider fluff designed to boost stock prices." Just a possibility to be aware of. A big unanswered question of mine is why do we hear...

    AI Good and Bad

The link above doesn't work for me, but I wonder if it might be the same article I was thinking about posting here.? This article IMO is a very good read. It's long, and I don't have a sense for what is and isn't correct. Whatever the case, it's full of things to think about. What it brings...

T568A vs T568B | What do you prefer?

Wow, a thread where I agree with all of the follow-on comments. Rare indeed! The video has too much introduction and teasing for my taste, but I wholly agree it's very helpful for somebody starting out attaching RJ45s, and I didn't catch any outright mistakes. I've been burned by the wire...

I don't know a good way to respond to this. The source story that zerohedge based its article on has three disclaimers: 1. The story is based on unconfirmed reports 2. Reuters couldn't confirm the alligations 3. Not clear what role AI played in the events Then zerohedge condenses/summarizes...

    AI Good and Bad

The article says " At least 10 patients were reported harmed between late 2021 and 2025". For me to take the narrative seriously I'd need to know how many patients where the doctors didn't use the AI were harmed. Medical error is touted as one of the leading causes of death in the US. The...

Its Game Over for Microsoft S00N [Windows 11 and AI]

Not so simple I realize, I see 2 different types of computer users: 1. Those with at least a little bit of tech savvy that see the OS as a platform to support apps they want to use. 2. Those with no tech knowledge that see computers as a consumer toy. Windows is going toward the consumer toy...

I'll title this post "Oregon follies". They're coming so fast that maybe the state should have its own thread. The Portland area has about a half dozen special taxes, like to subsidize the arts and preschool for all. This headline is about the tax for cleaning up the climate, which is a...
