    Security question

Thank you for all the info. A lot of it is above my knowledge but I'll do some research on how to accomplish. As far as breaking first rule, I'm allowing remote access to my network/NVR only through a tunnel VPN. Doesn't this provide protection in the form of an encrypted path into my network?

I turned on "disable internet access" for my NVR on the router. Will this accomplish the same thing you suggest?

    Security question

I have Hikvision cameras connected to POE ports on Hik NVR. On all cameras I've disabled uPNP, PNP, SSH. I access my system remotely using tunnel VPN via Asus router. What other precautions am I missing? Is there an issue with the cameras or NVR "phoning home"?

    Refurb Computers

Yes, I've looked on there and with the discount the prices are OK. Seems like with Amazon you get a little more bang for the buck but I'm not sure the cosmetics of the cases are as good. Not a big deal unless they have been ran in dirty environment. Another benefit is many have free returns...

    Refurb Computers

I want a full stand alone computer, not a just an RP. Reason being, this is also going to be a computer for my grandkids (to keep them away from mine). The comments on a "reliable seller" makes me wonder who they are. There are lots of sellers on Ebay and Amazon, and as I mentioned above, not...

    Refurb Computers

4th gen too slow for Blue Iris, or for general use computing?? I'm still running a 4th gen i7 and it seems to do pretty good for basic tasks. On the other hand I'm not sure the prices are that much more for 6th or 7th gen refurbs.

Yes, I'm aware of this, but I need/want a separate computer. It will be in a different location than my existing computer.

    Refurb Computers

Thanks for the quick replys. Very encouraging to hear of the good qualities of refurbs. There are sure a lot of dealers selling them on Ebay and Amazon. Amazon does offer free returns on some, but it would be nice to know of a reliable re-seller. I think for what I want to do I can get by...

    Refurb Computers

I've read a lot of posts recommending the refurb Dell Optiplex and HP EliteDesk computers for blue Iris systems. I need an extra computer to use to load and learn Linux. I've always built my own machines using quality parts and enjoyed the flexibility and reliability of choosing my own...

    Pi-hole and OpenVPN

OK, you have answered what I'm asking. Maybe I was not clear, as I am running OpenVPN on the Asus AC86U as the server. The Raspberry pi is only used to run Pi-hole. I really fly by the seat on my pants on stuff like this as I'm not too sharp on networking stuff. I just follow instructions...

    Pi-hole and OpenVPN

I have Pi-hole running on a Raspberry pi and would like to setup a tunnel vpn using OpenVPN on my Asus router for remote access to my Hikvision NVR. Am I going to run into any issues?

Maybe moving to Florida from Nevada. Also, questions about 5th wheeler trailer living & cameras

There is no "optimum size" or "one size fits all" trailer. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Why not just go look at different sizes and decide for yourself what you like? One person may say 30' is great, and the next will say 40' is great. You will best be served by the size that...

Maybe moving to Florida from Nevada. Also, questions about 5th wheeler trailer living & cameras

I tend to agree with this. This size range will be easy to pull and resell will be good. As to the truck, you did not mention if you were going to live basically in one spot (extended stay) or travel around (camping). My opinion based on my trailer and truck is that a 3/4 ton truck will be...

    Natural Gas Generators

Residential homes, where I live, are plumbed for natural gas delivery to the house at either a pressure of 7 to 10 inches water column, or 2 psi. If your house if plumbed for 2 psi you can locate your generator a little farther away from you gas meter, assuming the pipe is large enough (a...

    US Elections (& Politics) :)

Have you forgotten how close he came to being defeated in his last race for the senate by a liberal named Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke. With Texas turning more and more blue Cruz needs all the help he can get! He is obliviously not a plumber, but he could easily be out here passing out water...

    OpenVPN question

Thanks for the tips. I will play around with some of the settings and see what happens. I feel pretty secure at the present just not port forwarding and tightening up security on the router. But..........you can never be too safe.

    OpenVPN question

I can specify the gateway and preferred DNS server on the Hik cams. But then I'm not sure how to handle this change at the Hik NVR. Do I then change the DNS server and default gateway in the NVR to match the cameras? OR.......are we talking about two completely different sets of settings...

    OpenVPN question

The cameras have ability to set the address manually. But I'm not sure if this overrides the NVR or not. Looks like the only thing you can do is set the NVR's Internal NIC IPv4 address. Not sure if I see any advantage in changing that from the default 192.168.254.xxx.

    OpenVPN question

This is getting away from the OP question, but when you say you block everything you can, what all on your network are you blocking besides you camera system? Other threats? Also, I have my cameras connected directly to my NVR. My network IP is 192.168.50.xxx, while my cameras are...

    OpenVPN question

Thank you, that definitely explains the situation. Since I would seldom use remote access, I like the idea of switching the router settings remotely. I don't think I'm savvy enough to go much further, but I'll check out the link. Also, I may be a little conservative about worrying that the...

    OpenVPN question

I recently setup an OpenVPN tunnel and I'm using Hikvision IVMS4200 app on an Iphone for remote viewing. I had a lot of problems connecting originally but found the issue was in the Asus router. I had set "Block Internet Access" to ON with NVR's IP address to prevent the NVR from "phoning...

    Geovision firmware downloads

Anyone have any idea where to find old firmware update files for a Geovision FD150D camera? I've looked all over GV website and all I can find is latest firmware 3.xx which will not work on my 32M camera. I need firmware ver. 2.14.

    VPN/DDNS question

    VPN/DDNS question

I just got a new Asus AC86U router up and running. One of the reasons I purchased this router was to be able to set up a tunnel VPN using OpenVPN. I do not have a WAN static IP address so I was planning to use the free Asus DDNS server, but after exploring this option it looks like using this...

    Security question

I'm running a TP-Link Archer C5 router and I think I successfully blocked the NVR using the "Access Control" settings. Don't know how to run a manual check. I'm currently still showing correct time on the cameras. My NVR time setting is set to Manual Time Sync, not NTP>server address...

    Security question

Sorry, I don't understand. By using a 2nd NIC and creating a subnet, you would have to use OpenVPN to then access that subnet? You can see I don't know much about networking.

    Security question

I did a little research on this but not sure I understand. Would this be accomplished by adding a second NIC card to my computer. Then routing the NVR to that 2nd card? Currently I have the NVR going to the router. Apparently by going to a 2nd NIC it keeps camera traffic off router and...

    Security question

Thanks for the info. UPnP is disabled in my router. I ran several of the tests in GRC ShieldsUp and everything looked good. I've never had any evidence that there is an issue on my system, but I'm looking for any way to be more secure. I know there is a lot of knowledge on this forum and I...
