Newbie here, coming from dreaded Reolink. Educate me

Thanks again to everyone who has responded here and in direct messages to my questions. I am really trying not to make another bad investment/purchase on the CCTV front this time around. I’m sure I’ll be back here reading and asking more once I get everything all set up.

Well I went ahead and pulled the starter trigger. Just to dip my toes in for now and get familiar with BI.

Where does one buy Duhua cameras?

This is a great resource to have. I am in the process of being unripped off by my Reolink systems that I bought 3+ years ago and just looked at my RLC1224A sensor size for fun, to see where it falls on this chart. It's a 12MP camera with a 1/2.49" sensor. Well into the RED. SMH.

I see what your goal is here. You are simply saying it may be possible to use the Reolink NVR to test a new camera without getting a PoE switch and BI right away just to see the differences if the above test works.

Understood, I have also done a fair amount of research on EmpireTech as far as being the "unbranded/rebranded", different sticker, Dahua models. Do you think I should wait say 1-? months or go ahead and get BI, PC, and 1 IPC-T54IR-ZE-S3 to test with for now?

Unfortunately, I have the RLN8-410 which seems like it cannot be accessed from BI/Standalone devices.

Cool. I think I’ll start with this PC, BI (when available again) and build a test rig to test one varifocal 1/1.8”. Someone earlier mentioned new models coming out soon so it may be smart for me to wait a month or so and see what happens there but I’m excited to get into another “hobby” I don’t...

Good info. I just figured if I could get 8th gen for that cheap with decent storage (SSD for OS, HDD for recordings) then $130 seemed pretty fairly priced and future proofed as my BI PC as well as hosting my home assistant.

I was not aware until this thread that if you run a BI PC then that will hold your recordings. That’s the reason I posted here to try and get more insight on specific things as it got confusing quickly trying to navigate many different threads and posts.

Thanks for this, maybe I should hold off a bit as I am ok with the current Reolink setup for now and wait for the new models? Do you know a projected release?

Also, Could someone smarter than me explain the weaknesses and strengths of the 2MP 1/2.8" vs 4MP 1/1.8" besides the obvious difference in focal length (5-60mm vs 8-32mm)

Thoughts on this PC for BI with 6-8 cams?

Ah ok, so I could go with the PC/BI for storage/UI and then I just need a PoE switch to run the cameras

I have read this post from you across many threads since lurking around here and have myself been a victim of the invisible man syndrome, etc. There will be no returning here as I have had them installed close to 3 years at this point. I have just now started to explore and realize there are...

Wondering how much of an improvement I will see, learning curve/setup aside, going to these 4 cams compared to Reolink RLC-1224A's. Just trying to get an idea!

Another question, are the recordings stored within the BI PC or within the NVR? It seems in the "choosing hardware" section of the BI thread, that the recordings are stored within the BI PC..

Start with those 4, varifocal and NVR and then probably add 2 of the below for the longer ID cameras? EmpireTech IPC-B54IR-Z4E-S3 1/1.8" CMOS 4MP 8mm–32mm vari-focal WDR IR AI Network Bullet Camera

So you think that kit will be a sufficient starter kit to get going with NVR and 4 cameras and then I can add 2-4 more with a longer focal range for the front ID camera(s)? Maybe this PC is a better option, cost wise .

Also, exploring refurb/used PCs for BI. This seems it would be more than enough?

My thoughts, Take a kit like this, with 6 cameras or 4 and place these in the locations I have now, since these are varifocal 2.7mm-12mm they can be adjusted to fit different needs as far as DORI goes. Then if I need something more specific (LPR, closer ID, farther ID, etc) add those specific...

Thanks for the quick reply. I have read through both of those pretty extensively. And as you say, I only have more questions. I would say for the front cameras on the house I would like to be able to identify at the street distance with at least 1 camera and then the others on the front to...

I have read through the various stickies, cliff notes etc. Basically I have a Reolink system with 6 PoE cameras at my house and I'm looking for someone to help me pick out something that suits me well. Attached is a rough layout of my current system with some measurements.
