My mind cannot comprehend why the hell he is doing that but is obvious that those tiny twigs are not wanted close to his masterpiece.

The only thing I can come up with is that he was fabricating a makeshift "silent vehicle detector" that would snap the twigs and alert him an EV was sneaking up on him. It seems they were strategically placed in the wheel ruts. We all know that zombies ditched their ICE-powered cars for EV's, right?
