Can i directly connect a non-onvif IPC to a dahua NVR and use RTSP.

Hi all,

We just had our swann system's NVR die and I am doing a mad scramble to try to learn enough to get a system running with a new NVR (dahua NVR5216-16P-EI ?!?). I am hoping to use at least some of the 16 x NHD865MSB cameras with the addition of some real cameras that can actually pick up a good amount of detail. We inherited (by home purchase) the swann setup and it seems a shame to bin 16 working cameras, not sure that they are worth anything.

I'm able to stream from the individual cameras without an NVR using RTSP but unfortunately I cannot get connected via onvif. I can get to the camera settings via swann security software but i don't see any option to enable onvif. I did a lot of reading on here to get to this stage, so thanks go out to those willing legends that are happy to help people out.

So.... that said, what i am trying to confirm before purchasing a dahua NVR is if I can connect my cameras to the NVRs POE ports and use RTSP to at least get a live stream?? I have searched high and low and cannot find any mention of using the onboard ports. I did read somewhere (can't locate it now, of course) that I may need to connect it to a separate switch in order to use RTSP.

Note: I have confirmed that the 5216 does support RTSP

I’ve never been able to directly connect anything other than their previous brand; FLIR, or dahua oem’s. Everything else has always had to be on a switch with onvif user/pass.
Maybe someone can chime in about rtsp but I thought that was for a stream out from nvr not a camera in.

An easy way to check if ONVIF is supported (doesn't always appear in the camera configuration menus) is to use ONVIF Device Manager and see if it finds it.

ODM will automatically find ONVIF devices on the same LAN segment as the PC, and also show the needed RTSP strings and ONVIF port and other info such as whether ONVIF events are supported.

Thanks for your inputs. Underhill, hmm i thought that may have been the case, i might have to reach out to dahua direct and ask just in case.

alastairstevenson thank you, i did try ODM without success. Although there is a thread on here from 2018(?) That mention my camera model being onvif but maybe a firmware upgrade shut the door.

On another note, does anyone know how to find how many remote cameras can be connected to the NVR5216-16P-EI.?

Long time user of Swann SWNDH-880 (4k rebranded hikvision) and SWNHD-825 (3mp rebranded hikvision) cameras from costco. These have been great with my linux NVR bluecherry. They even took the hikvision firmware update.


I've recently purchased a new Swann PIR IP camera from https://www.walmart.com/ip/Swann-SW...rue-Detect-Camera-with-Audio-Bullet/493853045.

I was hoping it could see it on my network and somehow log in and recombobulate it to work on my system. So far no luck. Obviously the camera isn't automatically pulling an ip from the DHCP.

If you have for example, a 16 channel NVR, that's all the cameras you can connect, no matter how you attach them to the NVR.
