BI v5.9.9.75 Deleting ALL "stored" Video

Over the last year (using BI v5.9.8.5) I've been keeping about 26 hours of BI "new" video on a 500gb Windows C SSD drive. After 26 hours it transitions to a 6tb Windows D drive where I limit BI video storage to approx. 4tb (or 16 days of total video for 6 cameras). I've had zero problems with this arrangement for the last year.

When I upgraded from BI v5.9.8.5 to v5.9.9.75 on 15 Sep 2025, all 4tb of video on the 6tb Windows D drive was deleted. The 26 hours of "new" video stored on the 500gb Windows C drive was untouched. Over the last two weeks BI has been reaccumulating video on the 6tb Windows D drive again. It almost reached the 4tb (16 day) limit yesterday.

Earlier today I checked the video on the Windows D drive and there was only 3 days of video (from 28 Sep to 30 Sep; 01 Oct is on the C drive). For most or all of the day, BI has been deleting approx. 80-100gb of video from the 6tb Windows D drive every 5 minutes (see the two sections of the BI status log below). As of this writing the BI "stored" directory on the 6tb Windows D drive is now EMPTY (completely deleted). All I have is 24 hours of "new" video on the 500gb Windows C Drive. I haven't upgraded---still using BI v5.9.9.75.

With all the video on the 6tb Windows D drive now deleted, I'm assuming BI will start storing or accumulating video again like it did on 15 Sep 2025. Probably start saving video until it reaches the 16 day video storage limit again, start deleting in 100gb segments every 5 min, then rinse and repeat.

Nothing's been modified or changed in a year. The only change was upgrading from BI v5.9.8.5 to v5.9.9.75.

I can only assume BI v5.9.9.75 caused this problem. I have 7 versions of BI downloaded (v5.9.9.80 through v5.9.9.86). Should I consider upgrading to one of these versions?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I can't help you on your current issue, but I can suggest you re-think your storage configuration. I would forget recording to your C: drive SSD and just configure your 6TB drive for your clips. Forget the moving crap and you will have no more issues. Just a suggestion, if you don't like it, no problem.

@Tinman, @wittaj, thanks for the suggestion. I assume I would create a 4000-5000 GB "new" folder on the 6tb D drive, set Limit the Clip Age to 16 days and specify "delete" (vs. Move to Folder)? Not sure it's necessary, but should I also set the "stored" folder to 0 GB, not click Limit the Clip Age and specify "delete"?

As for my original problem, I believe it may have been caused by an improperly installed update. The Windows Add/Remove program list still showed the previous BI v5.9.8.5 was still installed. BI said it was running v5.9.9.75. Uninstalled BI (via Windows Add/Remove), then installed v5.9.9.80. Now both the Windows Add/Remove program and BI now show the same BI v5.9.9.80. Fingers crossed this resolves the original problem I experienced immediately after the update.

This is probably a classic case of don't fix it if it ain't broke. Been running v5.9.8.5 since Sep 2024 with only one minor camera issue. With my subscription expiring in Oct 2025, I figured I'd chance an update. Oh well.

Historically I have been a slow adopter of versions. but since this machine is so stable, I decided to fuck with it, for no good reason other than to see what happens when DB 6.0 or whatever.....5.9.9.85 gets loaded up.
Sometimes when you jump up a bunch of versions so many little things change. most go unnoticed, but like in your case, Some setting you had/have in your older version, behaves differently or has been defaulted to a different setting.
I have used BI in a commercial Condo situation, in a less than stellar neighborhood, and have my learning curve with storage and crashes, and db corruption early on,
I needed stability because the CCTV was only 3% of the job. It just had to be there when I needed to go back 3- 4 weeks. finally got ahold of a stable box in the HP elitedesk g4-800 SFF, ran twin surveillance drives, and a Samsung 256GB SSD.
@wittaj and @looney2ns and many others, recommended skipping the Stored and just filling the drives with the "new" and letting it self delete at about 85% full. They said dont use " age limit". now this was when version 5 was still new. So things have changed in 4 years. I'm sure they built "age limit"in there to actually serve a useful function instead of ruining a database, But i want as many days as i can get stored.
It was only because my upgraded DVR at the Condo had 2 months of reviewable data, that we were able to detect a pattern of mail theft following the G Floyd riots when some Banditos busted in a USPS location and got the Keys to the Kingdom, with St. Paul mailboxes.

It appears BI v5.9.9.75 is the very first release that uses the new v6 DB. That's a big change and probably explains most of my problems. If you don't want to deal with any of the v6 DB growing pains, I've been told v5.9.9.73 is the most stable release that still uses the v5 DB. Not sure whether you can rollback from a v6 to v5 DB though.

I have had zero issues with the new DB, I record both continuous and motion only across 18 cameras to 3 4TB spinners. All nicely sitting in just 2 files :)

Which version(s) have you been using?

Ken acknowledged he's had to implement "many fixes" to the v6 DB since its initial release via v5.9.9.75. He suggested I upgrade to .87, which I did. Fingers crossed :)

It is a silly function, to be sure. But the average person doesn't really understand gigabytes and bit rates at the same level as they understand "7 days" or "30 days". So I figure having the option for an age limit makes people feel more confident in their decisions, and less likely to complain that they don't understand how the storage system works.

Also it is a certainty that policies and regulations have been written in various industries forbidding the storage of surveillance data beyond a set number of days.

There is a real benefit to turning off the age limit though. Computers aren't perfect, and there are conditions (thankfully, rare conditions) that make the system clock jump ahead or back and this will, understandably, really mess with any age-triggered deletion schemes. As a personal example I had to deal with this year at work, one of our virtual machine servers had a bug where live migrating virtual machines caused an immense amount of disk usage on that server, to the point that no VM running on that server could access its disk anymore. Bad shit happened. VMs were freezing. Error logs were being sent out about I/O failures, timestamped in the year 2027. So either this bug accidentally created a time machine, or, all the VMs running on that server lost track of time.

Yeah, Blue Iris doesn't have exhaustive testing before releases, so bugs (and fixes) are frequent. Whether you were aware of it or not, staying on .75 was just asking for clip management bugs :)

As a rule, I install every update that Blue Iris releases so I can get early awareness of changes that affect UI3 (I develop UI3), and I haven't noticed any database bugs. But I was also only on release .75 for one day before moving to .77, then .78, then .79, and .80 on each of the following days.
