I’m a beginner and need help to determine best position a few cameras at front of my house to start with, before temp testing. I want these for early detection of movement, identifying people in case of stealing cars / entering house and deterrence.
I have bought:
(I’m planning to use 1 of the fixed cameras for my 20’ x 20’ rear courtyard)
Cameras are in transit, I used iPhone 12 on 0.5x to get an earlier idea of view from different rough positions. Photos are taken from Positions A, B, C and D; and where new Reolink doorbell camera will replace current Ring'.
I’m thinking:
What do you recommend? Will external wall lights be a problem or just need to be in good positions?
- the front of the house is only 20’ back from the edge of the road (no parkway (US)/nature strip)
- the road in front is 20’ wide including sidewalk on far side of the road, with 6’ fence on other side
- I’m at the top of a T-intersection, offset with the street coming up to my property; you can see down that street a little
- the property is only 50’ wide, with high neighbour fences on both sides
- both sides of house have 6” side gates
- the bottlenecks are (a) front path straight to front door, (b) path from driveway to front door, and (c) driveway to Garage doors.
- there is a street light to the SE corner of the T-intersection, about 60’ from front door
- the soffit/eave height is 7’ 5” over the garages, same height under the porch recess.
I have bought:
- Reolink video doorbell wired PoE
- 2x EmpireTech IPC-T54IR-AS-S3 1/1.8" CMOS 4MP IR 2.8 mm Fixed-focal Turret Network Camera
- 1x EmpireTech IPC-T54IR-ZE-S3 1/1.8" CMOS 4MP IR Starlight 2.7mm–12mm Vari-focal Turret Security Camera

I’m thinking:
- the 2.7mm–12mm Vari-focal in position A on the SE corner of the house under the soffit/eave 7’ 5” high to overlook driveway from side and into lane and partially street coming up to the T, and
- the 2.8mm Fixed-focal in position C under the porch soffit/eave 7’ 5” high, in the middle of the porch
- Reolink video doorbell 4ft (1.2m) high, on the brick column next to the front door on the porch, as it has a tall FOV and to avoid top-of-head video.
- Hue Philips Appear Up/Down lights on either side of the Porch and a Philips Hue Flood light above the garage doors.
