"A man's got to know his limitations"
I like that.
I have a new-old-stock Netgear SRX5308 quad WAN and 4 port LAN VPN firewall. This gigabit switch also has VLAN capability.
Even though it is no longer supported, I wonder about how to connect this into my home network and wrestle with its UI.
I'm a noob at establishing a VLAN and inserting this managed switch into a working net, so I may stumble around asking questions a bit before I get this kit working.
My home network presently consists of a cable modem/router (WIFI 6) with 4 gigabit Ethernet ports.
To that router I have a couple of gigabit multiport unmanaged switches connected to it.
There is also IoT connected wirelessly to the router e.g. Nest, iPhones, printers..
1) Eight ports of those switches are CAT6 wired to 8 cameras. Other ports of those switches are wire connected to stereo rcvr, Roku, smart TV's etc.
2) Those switches are in turn connected to the house net and one pc that is dedicated as an NVR running blue iris.
I want to VLAN the cameras and BI pc separate from the router, but be remotely monitored/controlled as need be, and able to access camera imagery from iPhones.
Question is, seems to me that connect the SRX5308 WAN port to the WIFI router's LAN port and then the SRX5308 LAN ports to the unmanaged switches.
From there, one switch box only to the cameras, and the other switch box to whatever else. The emphasis being on keeping the cameras isolated and accessible only to an authorized client. The 'whatever else' I'm not too worried about since they do need access to the internet.
Another question is, if I want this secure box with VPN protected WIFI, do I use the modem/router WIFI, or connect another router/WIFI to the secure box?
I think I know the answer, simple enough to test but wanted to hear what others think.
Thanks!
