To preface I am very new to all of this but have done some research so not completely oblivious but still on shaky ground.

I will be installing an IP system for my parents and am strongly leaning towards the Swann SWNVK-880004 (NVR-8000 NVR & NHD-880 cameras). This looks to be the exact same hardware as Hikvision DS-7608NI-I2/8P NVR & DS-2CD2085FWD-I camera.

I've read on here that the Hikvision software is much better and with continued updates than what Swann offers. I do understand that the Swann warranty will be voided if flashing the Hikvision firmware but it seems like the pros outweigh the cons (as long as it isn't bricked).
1) Would switching software from Swann to Hikvision be easily accomplished? Is this done with TFTP or is there another way? Any explanation on how to do this is greatly appreciated.
2) There is only Hikvision firmware for the NVR (on the US website) but not the camera so will there be any compatibility issues with the Hikvision NVR firmware with the Swann camera firmware?

If piecing the Hikvision hardware together it will cost ~$1,750 plus all of the cables and the Swann will cost $1,300 plus I will need 2 longer Cat5 cables than what they provide. So ideally I would like to purchase the Swann and convert them to Hikvision firmware considering all of the hardware is the same. Any other input is greatly appreciated!

HI
Seen a few posts of people claiming to have done the updates, but NONE have ever proved it with follow ups or video.

Having worked on a Swann that was bought by the owner before he was 'educated' I would suggest that unless you will fit it and NEVER have to update or touch it again, go for the Hikvision or even look to source Dahua from the guys that frequent this site.

The Swann was/is a PITA

You can not just use any cameras you like, you are limited to ones that are compatible with the NVR you chose, something NOT declared when they bought, so it cost more for the specific cameras that would work with it.

There are few if any updates for the NVR let alone the cameras and despite claims they are the very same models as Hikvision, I can imagine they have tweaked them somehow so that they are not...

If as you suggest you are to install this for someone else, then a fit and forget would suffice, having to provide support and assistance if you 'modify' them will be a nightmare.

if you do find any genuine proof of a successful flash from Swann to Hikvision, please come back and let us know.

For my friend, we have left the Swann as is in one area and now he has purchased Hikvision to cover his house, with the choice of cameras HE wants and options to update and expand at far cheaper prices, these being sourced from aliexpress.

Hope this helps a little

Definitely helps, thank you. Where would you recommend purchasing Hikvision products? I'm confused with all of the Chinese differences.

Are you now feeling curious to try flashing Hikvision firmware on your friends Swann?? :winktongue:

Hell no, this system is on his business side of things and it was not a cheap system :(

As for where to buy, I am happy using aliexpress / epsystems but YMMV, I am in Australia and so far I have had good experiences, I also think a lot of people get Dahua stuff from user empiretecandy? maybe consider that as he is on here...

Well I decided to go with a Dahua system due to all of the positive reviews and dealings with Andy. In the end it will cost about the same but with a better product and more add-ons.
