Major French supermarket chains on Monday said they were hit by a cyberattack that caused their refrigerators to shoot up in temperature in hundreds of stores, forcing spoiled food to be thrown away and raising concerns about food security. FRANCE 24's Selina Sykes reports.

I always thought it was stupid to connect a refrigerator to the Internet. I imagine the sales pitch is that the mothership can monitor performance and foresee incipient failures, but I wonder how much the loss from this event is? What does this have to do with food security? That term is already taken for describing people who need welfare to be fed.

Hundreds of French supermarkets suffered a massive cyberattack on October 12, 2026, which caused refrigeration systems to overheat, sparking fires and forcing the disposal of tons of spoiled food. Hackers hijacked Danfoss refrigeration controllers, remotely triggering forced defrost cycles that raised temperatures to 50°C (122°F) and, in some cases, up to 80°C, melting equipment and destroying stock across major chains including Intermarché, Coopérative U, Carrefour, and E.Leclerc.

The attack exploited outdated firmware in legacy Danfoss systems, with some hackers extending defrost cycles from one to eight hours to delay alarms and maximize damage. French authorities, including the Paris prosecutor and cybersecurity agency ANSSI, have opened investigations into the "unprecedented" incident, which is estimated to cause millions of euros in losses and has raised broader concerns about the security of connected industrial infrastructure and national food security.

Who did this?

No one has been identified. As of today, no group or individual has claimed responsibility, and neither French authorities nor Danfoss has named a suspect or disclosed how the attackers reached the controllers.

The Paris prosecutor's cybercrime unit (OFAC) and ANSSI are actively investigating, with ANSSI working alongside European counterparts. Cybersecurity experts note the attack appears to have been enabled by a combination of unpatched legacy Danfoss controllers and exposed internet-facing management interfaces — thousands of which were already known to be publicly reachable before the attack. The precise intrusion method has not been publicly established.

Several possible motives have been floated — extortion, hacktivism, state-linked signaling, or a crude demonstration of vulnerabilities that Claroty's Team82 had published in August — but none has been confirmed.
