Hey everyone. I have seen lots of discussion about mounting cameras in the soffits, pros/cons, techniques, etc, But I cant seem to find an example that matches my thought process. (PERHAPs because it is a stupid idea :))

We are in the middle of a full exterior home remodel that includes replacing all soffits. So, the timing is right to address this topic before we close everything back in..

I want to have a spotlight in each corner of the house (likely motion activated but potentially on low light at all times). I would ALSO like to have a mounting point for 1 or 2 cameras in the same soffit location. The soffits are 12" deep and we are dealing with 90 degree/right angles at almost all locations.

So, here is the dilemma. Electrician says that we need a "box for each appliance" and thus wants to install 2 boxes in each corner. But that creates a series of issues. So I am trying to decide...
1) mount 2 boxes in each spot
1a) in a figure 8 format (retaining the ability to see both directions around the corner)
1B ) some side by side format (eliminating the "around the corner" of at least one of the devices
2) mount only a lighting/electrical box at each spot and then use the "hole through soffit" for the cameras

You can see in the "current" photos below that the original mounting location is totally worthless. So no matter what, we will move into the middle of the soffit by using new bracing. Also, either way, I will have mounting/backing boards installed around the area to allow more secure mounting.

But if you had to mount 2 devices (lights and camera) and you wanted them both to be able to "see" around the 90 degree bend (essentially 270 degrees) How would you mount the box (or boxes)? Which is on the "inside" and which is on the "outside"? Do you really need 2 boxes or is 1 box (electrical) plus mounting plates "good enough"

Instinct tells me to go with 1 box or the figure 8 across the corner but once I put the soffit back in, I am sort of stuck with some big holes

Thoughts?

Hi @tiger275

For Soffits, you really do not need a "box" within the soffit for PoE cameras, as you can just put the pig tail connector back into the soffit.
Sometimes people need to drop the cameras down a bit for a better view angle to clear the fascia.

Of course, for electrical - yes you do need a box.

Ideally you want to test the locations before committing to work.

Do pay attention to the location of any lights when testing locations, as they will impact the low light image capture.

Personally, I would upgrade what I could to add 2x4 or 2x6 pieces at key locations while the soffit is open to provide support for any current and future camera installs.
Do pay attention that you are not blocking the airflow during this work.
