Slow gui... maybe bad HDD?

I have a pair of HIKVISION DS-9664NI-I8 NVRs, both with same number of cameras and HDDs. The interface on one of them is very sluggish. It takes an extremely long time to respond to input. I click on an option and it takes up to 20-30 secs to respond. All drives (4 drives on each) on both NVRs are full and are overwiting. At one point I was getting HDD errors for multiple "channels" on the NVR with interface issues. I updated firmware and then the warnings seemed to go away. But laggy interface still persists. I ran the onboard HDD test utilities and all 4 drives passed. My question revolves around adding a new drive or trying to replace a flaky one. I do not have RAID enbaled so is it possible to remove one drive at a time and see if the laggy interface issue clears up? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? I have new drives at my disposal.

If that's the SMART self-tests, they are fairly high level and can indicate 'Good' even when a drive is partly failing.

Much more useful is checking the specific values of the individual SMART attributes for those that may indicate underlying problems.

Hi.
I'm recovering this thread because I have the same issue, the NVR interface is very sluggish.
Dahua NVR 5416-16P-4KS2E
Fw version 3.216.0000000.0, buid date 2018-05-30
1 WD Purple 6 Tb, in use since june/2018

DMSS stopped being able to access Push Notification clips (IVS)
Checking the NVR, it had a message No Hard Drive.
It takes an extremely long time for the NVR to locally respond to inputs, even if trying to check things that are unrelated (I think) to the HDD, such as checking System Info or Logs.
Live view is OK, but recorded footage takes ages to appear.

I opened the NVR, disconnected the HDD and reconnected it to a different data cable; also reconnected the power cable to a different HDD port.
Reformated the HDD.
No Hard Drive message disappeared, but Storage/HDD Detect/Global Detect FAILS (red squares), even though Quick Detect is OK (green squares).
PROBLEM NOT SOLVED after these steps.

CPU is 27%, CPU Temp is Normal (43ºC), Memory is 65%

It seems to be a HDD issue, so I'm considering getting a new HDD, but can a failing HDD slow down the NVR as a whole?
Thanks in advance.
