Security suggestions for an expensive zero turn mower

Hey,

How is everyone? I need some help

My parents just purchased a nice, expensive, zero turn lawn mower for their home.

Do you know if there are any security measures that can be taken to secure the mower? e.g. I read about GPS tracking, can they put an alarm on it when it is not in use, etc.

They have cameras around the house, however, additional security measures are welcome, as this is a $$ machine.

There are tons of things you can do, where is this mower stored at? If your that worried about it, you can chain it to the garage wall or whatever wall it's stored at. You can place a camera right nexted to the mower, and have BI alert whenever their is motion. Or use a motion sensor that alerts your phone. There is endless options !

Yes it will be in the garage, so how do I chain it to the wall? Can you help me please so I can do it for my parents, or tell them how. Do I get a thick chain and then attach it to the wall? but can't they just rip it off?

How would this BI work? I don't think they have blue iris setup, but maybe there is a simpler option? I know that the cameras they have can send alerts.

Any recommendation for a motion sensor that alerts the phone?

A zero turn lawn mower would be a pretty hard thing to steal not only would you need a large vehicle to transport this But multiple people . I would assume long as the door is shut it should be fine, do your parents really live in that bad of a neighborhood where someone will break down the garage door and steal a very large mower? I would buy the heaviest chain I could find, bolt too a couple of studs in the garage . You could get a camera but I'm willing to bet if someone goes to the trouble of breaking down a garage door and transport something this large they will probably be wearing a mask.

The area they live in is good, but it is a small ranch community, so distances between homes are far.

I read about GPS tracking, like if it gets stolen, is there some way to track it?

you can install somehting like this in the floor of the garage right under an axle: heavy duty cement in ground anchor 50 mortorcycle/motorbike/quad/trailer/caravan | eBay

then use a heavy duty bike chain/lock.. dont look at what lawnmower owners are doing, look at what Motor bike owners are doing.. easier to steal a motor bike than a lawn mower.

the key to that is putting the chain/lock under the mower, with no slack and little room to maneuver, so anyone with a big pair of lock cutters wont have the range of motion or leverage required to operate them.. if you chain it to the wall or any place they can get a good bite onto the chain and then use the ground and there full weight as leverage and even the best lock/chain will be defeated.. If you do it right the only way to cut it all is with a grinder and tha'll make alot of noise and possibly start a fire in a shed full of chemicals.

GPS Tracking is stupid, the'll hide it in a shed/barn and it wont get a gps lock.

Store it indoors in an alarmed shed, chain it when not in use, hide the key, and unplug something simple but unobvious on it so it won't start even if they do find the key or hotwire it.

I think this is a good place to start, now I will add this, if you want to get even more advanced, you can buy a home automation hub something like a smartthings hub or wink hub and buy a z wave motion sensor, that way not only will it send a loud alert,but will also send you a alert to your mobile phone in case your away. Then once you get a Smartthings alert you can check the camera to see what is going on. Links below

I ordered this from Amazon and it came in the mail. It works ok if someone walks past it, not run.

BUT, it does not detect if someone walks briskly, or car drives by slow, even at driveway speed.

So, I can place it in the garage, and it will alert me if there is some movement within its range. That is fine, but nothing special

How about a higher quality, driveway motion detector, which can alert me if a car is coming in? :) :) not at F-1 speeds necessarily, but regular speed.

That motion sensor should alert you matter what. Are their any settings on it high, medium,low setting ?? Most of the Amazon reviews said to was to sensitive

Zwave sensors are much harder to configure and if you don't understand the zwave stuff you have to read up on it takes a bit of studying before you can understand it. Also Smartthings is good for a hobby but it's no professional security system also smartthings can you have the Dealys because of the cloud

I put that sensor on the fence on the driveway, and if I walked past it, it worked.

However, if I did drive the car past it, it did not work. I put it about 4ft high as was told in the instructions

The instructions say it is a 45 degree sensor, so I wonder if that matters?

I can check the setting, but I do not think there is a sensitivity setting, just volume, music and mode - music, light, music and light

lets say this does not work...anything else out there that is better

With the wireless devices I've found that the real range is about a tenth of the claimed range. In one "for example", my transmitter was about 100' from the house and it didn't work at all. I then ran wires from the sensor and placed the transmitter about 20' from the house with no obstructions between it and the house, and it worked intermittently. I finally ran more wire and put the transmitter in the house, and it's now 100% reliable.

On the driveway sensor, I gave up on PIR and went with a magnetic sensor. It's over 90% reliable, way better than PIR. When it doesn't trigger it's usually because the vehicle is creeping slowly. A high aluminum-content vehicle can slip by it easier. On the other hand, when a snowplow or trailer goes screaming by on the street 30 feet from the sensor I get a false positive.

for driveways its hard to beat a run-over air tube for reliability, they are not all that aesthetically pleasing or discrete; but even bikes will set em off and short of a branch falling on one they wont false.

This is prob why she is having problems I totally forgot about the range thing opps! Good point thought
