Yeah, I saw there is a whole thread on LPR advice. I was just spitballing here and sseeing if this may even work. I appreciate your help.

New to LPR? Considerations Before You Begin
Thought I would throw together a post on my experiences so far with LPR in an effort to help others that are considering running down that rabbit hole. There are some practical considerations you should know about LPR. I am approaching this from the position of using Blue Iris and Plate...ipcamtalk.com

That's the accurate quote of the day!![]()
Given a distance of around 80 ft, would you choose the 5442-Z4E-S3 over the 5241-Z12E-S2 for LPR? From what I've read, it looks like if the range works for Z4E it would be preferable to the Z12E, is that correct?
Take this advice from Witt.Personally I would go with the Z12E at 80 feet.
People underestimate distances or you have to adjust it to get a better angle and 80 feet now becomes 100 feet.
Keep in mind that the Z12E is like double the focal length of the Z4E, so it is more of getting the right one for the distance you need.
Personally I feel like the Z4E is good to about 60 feet. Some people are comfortable with it at 80 or 90 feet.
Also depends on the kind of plates you have - the stamped plates can be read at a longer distance with the Z4E than the printed plates.

I wanted to ask you briefly what you think of my camera setting. It's the T54IR-ZE-S3 with maximum zoom. I still have the B54IR-Z4E to possibly replace it.As @bigredfish pointed out, the ZE you purchased is an incredible camera as well.
I often say that every camera has a purpose, and a great location for the ZE is potentially a less than ideal location for the Z4E and vice versa.
Basically the only difference between the two (other than one is a turret and the other is a bullet) is the focal length that determines how far away you can zoom in and get a tighter field of view for identify. Personally I recommend IDENTIFY up to about 30 feet with the ZE at full zoom and about 65 feet with the Z4E at full zoom. Some people prefer to cut those numbers back, while others feel like the distance can be stretched.
Here is the review thread on the ZE:
Mini-Review - 5442-ZE-S3 AKA T54IR-ZE-S3 - Replacement to 5442-ZE
As many of us are aware, Dahua decided to keep the same model numbers of some of their most popular models like the 5442-Z12E and the 5442 series cameras, but they have been updated with a newer GUI and specs that on paper show better than the previous version as was discussed in this thread...ipcamtalk.com
