Masking out areas for motion detection

How do I mask areas so the motion detection isn't triggered for things like trees etc?

As I understand the process, use the camera's trigger's zones and hotspots, and to have any areas be ignored, just don't include those areas into any zones. In one of my cameras, I cleared out the whole view's Zone A, and rebuilt it to avoid the trees.
