I am looking to replace my existing server which is about 7 years old running AMD and I been using it as HTPC to record my TV shows. Now I wanted to replaced it with an i7 so I can add Blue Iris on it.

Any special deal going down for the i7 online somewhere? I am either looking for a full size case or a mid-size case that can accept 2 full size PCI-e cards which I use for recording from a DirecTV boxes.

Thank you

Envy 750se? Look like it was built to be a gaming machine, isn't the video card on it kind of overkill for the Blue Iris?

I should add that we don't watch recording directly from the HTPC server, we have a client at each TV where we watch our recording from so there no heavy drain on the HTPC itself. All it does it recorded shows from the DirecTV boxes and HDHomerun HDTV.

750se look awesome and I am sure Blue Iris is not going to have any issue operating a bunch of cameras from it but I am look for more in the 500ish dollar range and that can handle the HTPC recording and about 6 to 8 camera max.

Yes, the envy...BI is adding hardware acceleration particularly optimized for nvidia, so it may not be overkill..you can check with hp to see if integrated graphics can be used if the card is removed.
I would not use the same machine to act both as an htpc and vms...a vms machine should be dedicated to the task.

I have spoken with several folks on HTPC forums who been running HTPC and Blue Iris on same server for some time without any issues and they said that their CPU usage is still stable. You just don't want to try to play back recording from the HTPC itself which will spike the CPU usage during decoding process.

The recording saved through encoding is done by the hardware on the peripheral card in the expansion slots and also by external device via USB so hardly any CPU usages there since all it doing is writing to store on hard drive and creating GUI with a list of recorded show to send to the clients. I can record 6 different shows at the same time without a burp from the server.

For playback, I have clients with awesome decoder hardware at each TV in the house which pull the GUI from the server and display me a list of recording to play back also I can watch Live TV if I wanted to but that mean watching commercials too

I am trying to work on a program where if a movement/heat is detected that it will interrupt whatever we are watching and playback the camera that detected the movement/heat. Since all my TV are tied into that server, it would playback on all of the TVs in the house.

Just because folks are doing it doesnt mean its a good idea. You have to understand that they may be using low resolution cameras or only a few cams...cpu use is mostly affected by camera resolution and the number of cameras.

A tangent here...how can I record shows from my DTV boxes to a server?
That would be great.
I have DTV whole home setup, w 4 dvrs..it is a pain having to go to another room to set recordings if I want to record more than 2 shows ( the max for each dvr at once).

Once on a server are they decoded so you can move them to like an iPad for later viewing?
Can you play back from the server in any room in full HD (rooms with or without a DTV box?)
Thx

Sorry didnt see see this post until now, you will need some type of capture card or device to record from your STB etc. It saved to a file where you could convert into a format to take with you for later viewing or you can remotely watch it from mobile phone or tablet

I suggest you go to www.sagetv.com to learn more about it, it is now open sourced and free to use. They have a forum that can help you get started

I'd say why record anything these days ? I use Fire TV with KODI installed and I see every movie / TV show and live sports of any kind anytime for free or should I say 60 bucks and some software. You can put KODI on anything android stick, PC what ever. KODI was XBMC which is what Netflix copied. I have been on XBMC and KODI for over 7 years flawless less streaming. I would reccomend if you try KODI use addon GENESIS and PHEONIX.

Because some of us dont willfully break copyright laws.

HDHomeRun for OTA TV, Netflix and Prime Video, then Plex for TV/Movies, Sonarr and CoutchPotato for scraping usenet for media files, 20TB NAS for Storage and an AndroidTV device on every television in the house.. Its all powered by a water cooled 6 core phenom w/16gb ram in a 4U rackmount chassis w/HotSwap Bays running FreeNAS.. Plex/Sonarr/CoutchPotato/Torrent downloader/NZB downloader are all running as jails on the NAS.

for just TV alone I am sitting at 169 Shows (120 airing) and about 13k episodes.. I'll purge out shows as they appear on netflix to save storage space, but I am currently at no risk of filling it up soon.

Because some of us openly ignore any laws we disagree with.. now excuse me, I need to go break some federal laws before I loose my buzz.

You are someone I could definately get along with , and streaming ain't stealing someone else is broadcasting not me I am just viewing plus, where I live there are no such laws. Go ahead and give Mr. Wienstien another yacht not me.
